About what do they ask each other?
About the momentous tiding,
the one in which they hold contrarian views!
On the contrary, they shall soon know
Then, not any [views] at all. They shall know.
Have WE not rendered the earth as a cradle?
And the mountains as anchors?
And WE have created you in complementary pairs
And WE made your sleep a time of rest
And WE rendered the night as a cloak
And WE made the day a bearer of livelihood
And WE raised above you the unyielding seven
And WE placed a brightly burning lamp
And WE sent down profusely streaming water from the fusing clouds
So, WE may thereby bring forth grain and a profusion of plants
And lushly dense gardens
Of certain, the Day of Sorting was ever set in time—
a day the forms are blown into— for you to come forth in droves
And the heavens were opened— they were portals
And the mountains were moved away— they were a mirage.
Of certain, Jahannam was lying in wait
for the unrestrained usurpers, a homecoming
to tarry therein for long spans.
They will taste therein neither any coolness nor any drink,
except a fluid bereft of mercy [ḥamīm], and a fluid of gloom [ghassāq]
A fitting recompense.
Surely, they were not expecting to be called to account
And they had given OUR signs the lie— lie after lie
And everything, WE had committed [with every detail] to a record
Hence, taste [your own doings]. So [now when it is too late to repent] WE will not give you more of anything except a punishment.
Verily, for the God-conscious is the fruition of success:
Orchards and vineyards
and splendid companions, perfectly matched
and a full cup.
They are not to hear therein any vain chatter or false talk
A recompense from your Rabb— a fully reckoned grant.
Rabb of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them— Al Raḥmān! They will not possess the power from HIM to speak,
The day when the Spirit and the angels stand arrayed. None will speak, or be spoken to, except one given leave by Al Raḥmān. And he spoke accurately.
That is the Day, Real and True. So, whosoever had willed, had taken a homecoming unto his Rabb.
Surely, WE have warned you of an imminent punishment on a day when every individual will see what his two hands sent ahead, and the disbeliever will say, “O I wish I were dust.”
