Surah “The Letter Sad”

as rendered by Zulfiquar Ali Bhotto — 88 verses

Sad [abrogated nations]. By the Qur'an, having the Reminder.
No but is there [Qur'an 38:1]. Those who disbelieved are in pride and dissension.
So many of a generation We have destroyed before them, so [to repent] they called out when there was no longer a time for escape.
And they wonder that there has come to them a warner [Muhammad] from themselves. And the infidels said, "This [Muhammad] is a magician, a liar.
Has he made the gods [accountable, Quran Qur'an 2:24, Qur'an 37:22] to one God? Indeed, this is a curious thing."
And the chief leaders of them went forth, [saying] that: "Walk [on your way], and be patient over [the defense of] your gods. Indeed, this is a thing that is desired.
We have not heard about this [Qur'an 38:5] in the later religion. Left is nothing, this to be except a fabrication.
Was the Reminder sent down upon him out of all of us?" No but is there [it was]! They are in suspicion from My Reminder. No but is there! They have not just tasted My punishment.
Or do they have the treasures of the mercy of your Lord, the Exalted in Might, the Bestower?
Or is theirs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them? Then let them ascend through the means.
Whatever soldier is there from all the parties will be of those abrogated [nations, Qur'an 38:1, shown below].
The people of Noah belied before them, and [likewise] Aad and Pharaoh having the stakes,
And [likewise] Thamud and the people of Lot and the companions of the woods [Shu'aib]. Those are the parties.
Left was no party in all [parties] except it belied the messengers. So My torment [Qur'an 38:3] was being true.
And these [leaders, Qur'an 38:8, likewise] not waiting except one shout; thereto there will be no recovery.
And they said, "Our Lord, hasten for us our share [in the shout, Qur'an 38:15] before the Day of Account."
Be patient upon what they say [O Muhammad] and remember Our slave, David, possessor of the hands [dealing skill]; indeed, he was always turning in repentance.
Indeed, We subjected the mountains with him, all glorifying [Allah], in the evening and at the sunrise.
And the bird were assembled, all belonging to him often turning in repentance.
And We strengthened his kingdom and gave him wisdom and sound approach [to interpret speech].
And has news of the disputants come to you [O Muhammad] when they climbed over the wall into the prayer room -
When they entered upon David so he was afraid of them? They said, "Fear not. [We are] two disputants, one of us has wronged against the other, so establish [the wronged one] between us in the truth but do not cross the limits [of animal rights, interpretation expertise etc] and guide us to the sound path.
Indeed this, my brother, has ninety-nine sheep, and I have one sheep; so [considering his more experience, sheep being a social animal, etc] he said, `You should entrust her to me,' and he overpowered me in the speech."
[David] said, "He has certainly wronged you by demanding your sheep [to be added] to his own sheep. And indeed, many of the partners, some of them oppress against other, except those who believed and worked the righteous deeds, and they [the oppressors] are not a few!" And David was certain that We tested him [with a homework of speech interpretation, Qur'an 38:22-23], and he asked forgiveness of his Lord and fell down bowing and turned in repentance.
So We forgave that for him; and indeed, for him with Us is nearness and a good place of return.
[We said], "O David, indeed We have made you a vicegerent in the earth, so establish [the way of Allah] between the people in the truth and do not follow the desire for [that] will astray you from the way of Allah." Indeed, those who go stray from the way of Allah, for them, a severe torment in that which they have forgotten [i.e., the fire, Qur'an 38:27], to be there the Day of Reckoning [onward].
And We did not create the heaven and the earth and whatever is between them without purpose. That is the assumption of those who disbelieved, so woe to those who disbelieved, of the Fire.
Or should We make those who believed and worked righteous deeds like the corrupters in the land? Or should We make those who revere Allah like the wicked?
A Book We sent it down to you, [O Muhammad], blessed that they may contemplate its verses and that those of understanding would be remembering.
And to David We gave Solomon. An excellent slave, indeed he was one always turning back [to Allah].
[Mention] when presented upon him in the evening the excellent horses.
And he said, "Indeed, I preferred love of the good [development, progress] from the remembrance of my Lord until they [the horses] disappeared in the veil [of machinery developments]."
[He said], "Return them [the horses] to me," then he began to pass his hand over [their] legs and necks [a gesture].
And We certainly tested Solomon and placed upon his chair a lifeless body; then he turned away [from lifeless machines, fossil energy].
He said, "My Lord, forgive me and grant me a [green, organic] kingdom that will not suit to anyone after me. Indeed, You are the Bestower."
So We subjected to him the wind flowing by his command, gently, wherever he struck [Qur'an 34:12],
And [also We subjected to him] the devils - every developer and diver
And [related] others bound together in fetters [interdisciplinary experts].
[We said], "This is Our gift, so give or withhold as you please, without account."
And indeed, for him with Us is nearness and a good place of return.
And mention Our servant Job, when he called to his Lord [saying] that: "Satan has afflicted me with distress and torment."
[So he was told], "Strike [the ground] by your foot; this would be a [spring of water for] a cool bath and drink."
And We granted for him, his people and the like of them along with them, a mercy from Us and a reminder for those of understanding.
[We said], "And take [O Job] in your hand a bunch [of grass] and strike with it and do not break your oath." Indeed, We found him patient, an excellent slave. Indeed, he was one often turning in repentance [to Allah].
And [O believer, interested in leadership] remember Our slaves, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - possessors of hands [dealing skills] and the eyes [scanning skills].
Indeed, We distinguished them by a distinct skill as mentioned [in Qur'an 38:45], the adobe [of skills].
And indeed they would be with Us; for from the sincere ones, the best skillful [Qur'an 38:45].
And [also] remember Ishmael, Elisha and Dhul-Kifl, as well as all of the outstanding ones.
This [Qur'an 38:45] is a reminder [for ones interested in leadership]. And indeed, for those who guard [themselves and their people against bad] is a finest place of return
Gardens of eternal bliss, with their doors wide open for them.
Relaxing therein [in thrones], ordering therein about abundant fruit and drink.
And with them will be the modest gaze women, equals in age.
This is what you, [the addressee, Qur'an 38:45], are promised for the Day of Account.
Indeed, this is Our livelihood; for it there is no depletion.
This [is so]. And indeed, for the tyrants is an evil place of return -
Hell, they will enter it, and wretched is the resting place.
This is, so let them taste it: scalding water and bitter cold.
And others of its shapes, in pairs [heat burn, cold burn].
[The tyrants was told], "This is a crowd rushing with you. No hi with them. Indeed, they will be burning in the Fire."
[The tyrants] said, "No but is there! You [the filthy crowd], no Hi by your [leaders]. You brought this to us, and wretched is the settlement."
[further] said, "Our Lord, whoever [Qur'an 2:24, Qur'an 21:98] brought this to us; increase for him double torment in the Fire."
And said [to one another], "What [a pity] to us that we do not see men [i.e., Muslims]. We were counting them from the evil ones?
Did we took them in ridicule, or have our eyes missed them?"
Indeed, that is truth - the quarreling people of the Fire.
Say, [O Muhammad], "I am only a warner, and there is no deity except Allah, the One, the Supreme.
Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, the Invincible, the Forgiver."
Say [O Muhammad], "It [Qur'an] is a great news
From which you [chiefs, Qur'an 38:6] are turning away.
I had no knowledge of the leaders, the praised [era] when they would be disputing [on Qur'an].
Left would be nothing [to dispute on what] has been revealed to me except I am only an obvious warner."
[Mention] when your Lord said to the angels, "Indeed, I am going to create a humankind from clay [primordial Eve, Qur'an 15:28, Qur'an 7:189].
So when I straightened him [in gender identity] and breathed into him of My spirit [leadership, manhood instincts, Qur'an 38:45, Qur'an 2:30], so you all fall down to him in prostration."
So the angels prostrated - all of them altogether.
Except Iblees; he was arrogant and became of the infidels.
[Allah] said, "O Iblees, what prevented you from prostrating to that which I created with My hands? Were you arrogant, or were you of the ones far reaching?"
He said, "I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay."
[Allah] said, "So get out of paradise [to earth, Qur'an 7:13] for indeed, you are expelled.
And indeed, upon you is My curse until the Day of Recompense."
He said, "My Lord, so reprieve me [to stay in paradise] till the Day they are sent off [to earth, the well known day, Qur'an 15:38]."
[Allah] said, "So indeed, you are of those reprieved
till the Day of the time well-known [they are to be sent off to earth]. "
[Iblees] swore, "By your greatness [Qur'an 17:62, Qur'an 7:14-15, Qur'an 38:79-80], I will surely mislead them altogether
Except your sincere slaves from them."
[Allah] said, "Then it is the truth, and the truth I say -
[That] I will surely fill Hell out of you and out of whoever follow you from them all together."
Say, [O Muhammad], "I do not ask you [O men] any payment upon it [the Reminder]. And I am not of the pretenders.
Left is nothing, this to be except a Reminder [explanation of all things, Qur'an 38:1] for the worlds,
And that is, you will definitely know [by experience] its information after a time."
