Surah “The Troops, Throngs, The Companies”

as rendered by Zulfiquar Ali Bhotto — 75 verses

The sending down of the Book is from Allah, the Invincible, the Irrefutable.
[O Muhammad] indeed, We sent down to you the Book in the truth. So worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in the religion.
Verily, for Allah is the pure religion. And those who took other protectors than Him, [they say], "We worship them not except that they might near us to Allah in nearness." Indeed, Allah will establish between them [they and their protectors] this [Qur'an 39:36, Qur'an 3:31] wherein they were differing. Indeed, Allah does not guide he who is a liar, an infidel.
Had Allah ever wanted to take a son [Qur'an 39:3], He would had surely selected whatever he wished from what He creates. Glory be to Him; He is Allah, the One, the Prevailing.
He created the heavens and earth in the truth. He rolls up the night over the day and rolls up the day over the night and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running for a stated term [Qur'an 6:96]. Verily, He is the Almighty, the Perpetual Forgiver.
He created you [people] from one soul [primordial Eve]. Then He made from her, her mate [through female-male-female gender alteration of primordial Eve], and He sent down for you [people] of the cattle, eight mates. He created you all in the wombs of your mothers, creation from after creation, in three darknesses. That is Allah, your Lord; to Him belongs the kingdom. There is no deity except Him, so how do you avert?
If you disbelieve, so indeed, Allah is Free from need of you. But He does not like for His slaves, the infidelity. And if you thank, He would like that for you; and no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return, and He will inform you about what you were working. Indeed, He is Aware about all the breast's secrets.
And if adversity touches man, he calls his Lord, turning to Him [forgetting their taghuts, Qur'an 39:17]; then when He bestows on him a favor thereof, he forgets not he was calling thereto before [the adversity], including [the taghuts, Qur'an 39:17, that] he set up to Allah as equals for straying from His way. Say, "Enjoy [your taghuts] in your infidelity for a little; indeed, you are of the companions of the Fire."
Is he who is devoutly obedient during the night, prostrating and establishing fear of the Hereafter and hope in the mercy of his Lord, [like one who forgets]? Say, "Are those who know equal to those who do not know?" Only those of understanding will be remembering.
Say, "O My slaves who have believed, fear your Lord. For those who do good in this world is good, and the earth of Allah is spacious. Indeed, the patient one will be given their reward in full without reckoning."
Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, I have been commanded to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion.
And I have been commanded to be the first to submit [as Muslim]."
Say, "Indeed I fear, if I disobeyed my Lord, the torment of an awesome Day."
Say, "Allah [alone] I do worship, sincere to Him in my religion,
So worship what you [infidels] will other than Him." Say, "Indeed, the losers would be the ones who will lose themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection. Unquestionably, that is the obvious loss."
For them there would be layers of the fire from above them and [same] layers from below them. Allah warns through that, His slaves: "O My slaves, so fear Me."
And those who have avoided the taghut [false gods], lest they worship them, and turn to Allah - for them are glad tidings. So give glad tidings to My slaves
Those who listen to the saying [Qur'an 39:9], then follow the best of it. Those are they whom Allah has guided them, and those are people of understanding.
Then, is he who made the word of torment true against him [be other than Qur'an 39:8]? So, will you save whoever is in the Fire?
But those who have feared their Lord - for them are chambers, from above them chambers built high, flowing from beneath there, the rivers. [This is] the promise of Allah. Allah does not fail to the promise.
Do you not see that Allah sends down rain from the sky and insert it as springs in the earth; then He produces thereby vegetation of different colors; then they dry and you see them yellowed; then He makes them debris. Indeed in that is a reminder for those of understanding.
So can he whose breast Allah has expanded to Islam so he be always upon a light from his Lord [be other than a reward of his understanding, Qur'an 39:21]? So woe to those for hardening their hearts than remembering Allah. Those are in manifest error.
Allah has sent down the best narration: a Book made looksake once paired [Qur'an 15:87, the interpretation toolkit: \, \, \, \, \, \, \, \, \, \, \, \, \, \ ]. The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver from its [deep layer meaning]; then their skins and their cores relax [through the meaning] near the reminder of Allah [i.e., input layer]. That is the guidance of Allah He guides by it whomever He wills. And whoever Allah strayed him - for him there is no guide.
Then is he who covers by his face [racial complexion, caste rule] worst of the torment [justifying slaughtering babies, children, elderly people, woman, trees, ox, sheep, casting by birth be other than shame] in the Day of Resurrection? And it will be said to the oppressors, "Taste what you were earning."
Those before them belied [such torment as `divine' ruling, Qur'an 39:24], so punishment came upon them [their ancestors] from where they did not perceive.
So Allah made them taste shame in the worldly life. But the torment of the Hereafter is greater, if they were knowing.
And We have certainly presented for the people in this Qur'an from every [kind of] example, perhaps they may be reminded by.
[It is] an Arabic Qur'an, without any crookedness that they might become righteous.
Allah presents an example [O reader]: a slave owned by quarrelling partners and another belonging exclusively to one man; are they equal in comparison? Praise be to Allah. No but is there! Most of them do not know.
Indeed, you [O reader] will die, and indeed, they will also die.
Then indeed you [people], on the Day of Resurrection, before your Lord, will be disputing [with one another].
So who was more oppressor than one who lied against Allah and belied the integrity when it dew near to him? Is there not in Hell a dwelling for the infidels?
And those who brought in the integrity [through historical analysis] and sincerely believed thereby, those are the righteous.
For them is whatever they wish with their Lord. That is the reward of the good doers -
That Allah will expunge from them the worst of what they worked and will recompense them, their payment is with the best of what they were working.
Is not Allah sufficient for His Slave [Prophet Muhammad]? And [yet], they threaten you with those [they worship] other than Him. And whoever Allah strays - for him there is no guide.
And whoever Allah guides - for him there is no strayer. Is not Allah Exalted in Might, Master of Retribution?
And if you asked them who created the heavens and the earth, they would say, "Allah." Say, "Then have you considered what you invoke other than Allah? If Allah wanted harm regarding me, are they removers of His harm; or if He wanted mercy regarding me, are they withholders of His mercy?" Say, "Sufficient for me is Allah; upon Him do rely the [sincere] reliers."
Say, "O my people, work on your position, [for] indeed, I am working; then soon so you will know -
Who brings a torment shaming him and places upon him an everlasting torment."
Indeed, We sent down to you [O Muhammad] the Book for the mankind in the truth. So whoever is guided, it is for [the benefit of] his soul; and whoever goes astray only goes astray against that. And you are not a manager over them.
Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during their sleep. Then He keeps those for which He has decreed upon them the death and releases the others for a stated term [Qur'an 67:2]. Indeed in that are signs for a people who ponder.
Or have they taken other than Allah as intercessors? Say, "Even though they do not own anything, nor do they reason?"
Say, "All the intercession belongs to Allah. To Him belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. Then to Him you all will be returned."
And when Allah is mentioned alone, the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter loathe, but when those [Qur'an 39:43] other than Him are mentioned, immediately they rejoice.
Say [O Muhammad], "O Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, You establish between your slaves this [Qur'an 39:44] wherein they were differing."
And if those who oppressed had all what is in the earth altogether and the like of it with it to ransom themselves thereby from the worst of the torment on the Day of Resurrection [it won't be accepted]. And there will appear to them from Allah what they are not considering.
And the evils of what they earned had appeared to them and it coiled in them what they were on therein ridiculing.
And when harm touched the human, he called Us; then when We bestowed on him a favour from Us, he said, "I was just coming to it on knowledge." No but is there [being only a favour]! It is a test, but most of them are not knowing.
Those before them had already said it, but it did not avail [any] of them what they were earning.
And the evils of what they earned inflicted them. And those who oppressed from those, will inflict them, the evils of what they earned; and they will not be be able to escape by.
Do they not know that Allah extends livelihood for whomever He wills and restricts it? Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.
Say, "O My slaves who have committed excess against their own souls, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."
And turn to your Lord [in repentance, O men] and surrender to Him before coming upon you the torment; then you will not be aided.
And follow the best what was revealed to you [i.e., the approach, Qur'an 8:29, Qur'an 3:7-8] from your Lord before coming upon you [O men] the torment unexpectedly while you do not perceive,
Lest a soul should say, "Oh pity for me, upon what I neglected in the direction of Allah [given in Qur'an 39:23] and that I was surely of the mockers [Qur'an 21:5,Qur'an 21:50]."
Or [lest a soul] says, "If only Allah had guided me, I would have been of the righteous."
Or [lest] it say when it sees the torment, "If only for me had another chance so I could be of the good doers."
No but is there [for Qur'an 39:55]! [Allah said], "There did come to you My verses then you belied them [as jumble of dreams, Qur'an 21:5] and were arrogant, and you were from the infidels."
And on the Day of Resurrection you [O Muhammad] will see those who told lies against Allah. Their faces will be darkened. Is there not in Hell an adobe for the arrogant ones?
And Allah will save those who guarded their God consciousness - in their place of triumph; no evil will touch them, nor will they grieve.
Allah is the Creator of every thing, and He is Guardian over every thing.
To Him belong the keys of the heavens and the earth. And they who disbelieve in the verses of Allah, those, they are the losers.
Say, [O Muhammad], "So, is it other than Allah that you command me to worship, O the ignorant ones?"
And it was already revealed to you and to those [prophets] before you: if you associate [anything with Allah], your work would surely become worthless, and you would surely be of the losers."
No but is there [Qur'an 39:65]. You should worship Allah and be of the thankful ones.
They did not value Allah as He should be valued, and the earth entirely will be in His grip on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens will be folded in His right hand. Exalted is He and is high above what they associate [with Him].
And it was blown in the trumpet, so fall dead whoever is in the heavens and whoever is in the earth except whomever Allah willed. Then it will be blown in it another time, and at once they rising up gazing around.
And the earth shone with its Lord's light, and the book [of deeds] was placed; and the prophets and the witnesses are brought; and it will be judged between them in the truth, and they will not be wronged.
And every soul will be paid in full what it had worked; and He is most knowing about what they are doing.
And those who disbelieved will be driven to Hell in throngs until, when they reached it, its gates were opened and its keepers said to them, "Did there not come to you messengers from yourselves, reciting upon you the verses of your Lord and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours?" They said, "No but is there. But the word of torment [Qur'an 11:119] came true against the infidels."
[To them] it will be said, "Enter the gates of Hell to abide eternally therein, and wretched is the adobe of the arrogant ones."
But those who revered their Lord were be driven to Paradise in throngs until, when they reached it while its gates were opened and its keepers would say, "Peace be upon you; you have been good; so enter it to abide eternally therein."
And they said, "All praise be to Allah, Who has made true for us His promise and made us inherit the earth [Qur'an 14:46], settle from Paradise wherever we wish. So excellent is the reward of [righteous] workers."
And you will see the angels surrounding the Throne, glorifying [ Allah ] with praise of their Lord. And it will be judged between them in the truth, and it would be said, "All praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds."
