Surah “The Cow”

as rendered by Zulfiquar Ali Bhotto — 286 verses

2:1
Alif [Common sense], Lam [Self referencing], Meem [Natural sciences].
2:2
That is the Book [the Qur'an], there is no doubt concerning it being a guidance for those who guard God consciousness,
2:3
Those who believe in the unseen, establish the prayers, and for what We have provided for them, they spend [all halal ways],
2:4
And those who believe in what was sent down to you, [O Muhammad], and that [its former border, Qur'an 13:40-41] which was was sent down before you, and of the Hereafter they are certain.
2:5
Those are upon [right] guidance from their Lord, and those, they are the successful ones.
2:6
Indeed, those who rejected [covered up, Qur'an 2:1], it was the same upon them, whether you have warned them or not warn them, they are not going to believe.
2:7
Allah has sealed upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and over their vision is a veil [from retraining their, Qur'an 2:1]. And for them is a great punishment.
2:8
And from the people [in Qur'an 2:6] who say, "We believed in Allah and in the Last Day," but they are not believers.
2:9
They seek to deceive Allah and those who believed, but they are not deceiving except themselves but do not feel [due to Qur'an 2:6].
In their hearts is disease, so Allah has increased their disease; and for them is a painful punishment about what they were lying.
And when it was told to them, "Do not spread corruption [of minds on Qur'an 2:1] in the earth," they said, "We are only reformers."
Verily, they are the corrupters, but they do not feel.
And when it was told to them, "Believe as the people have believed [using, Qur'an 2:1]," they said, "Shall we believe as the fools have believed?" Verily, they are the fools, but they do not know.
And when they meet those who believed, they said, "We believed;" but when they went aside to their devils, they said, "Indeed, we are with you; we were only mocking."
Allah mocks them and prolongs them in their transgression. They are blundering all along [due to Qur'an 2:6]
Those [in Qur'an 2:6] are the ones who have exchanged the astray [in their terms, i.e., the guidance] by the guidance [in their terms, i.e., the astray]; so their transaction did not bring profit, nor were they guided.
Their example was like the example of one who ignited a fire [controversy], then when the fire illuminated what was around it [unnoticed things], Allah took away their sight and left them in darkness, they do not see,
Deaf, dumb and blind. So they will not return [to Qur'an 2:1].
Or like a rainstorm from the sky, within which is darkness [challenge], thunder [call], and lightning [benefit]. They set up their fingers into their ears from the thunderclaps dread of the death. And Allah is All-Encompassing about the infidels.
The lightning almost snatches away their sight. Every time it lights [the benefit] for them, they walk therein; but when it darkens [put challenges] on them, they stalled. And if Allah had willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight. Indeed, Allah is over everything competent.
O mankind, worship your Lord the one who created you and those before you; perhaps you may guard [against evil].
[Allah, the one Lord] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a building and sent down from the sky, water and brought forth therewith, from the fruits, livelihood for you. So do not set up equals to Allah while you know.
And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our slave [Muhammad], then bring a Surah of its like, and call your witnesses other than Allah, if you are truthful.
But if you do not do it, and you will not do it, then fear the Fire, whose fuel is the men [whom you take as deities, Qur'an 21:98, Qur'an 37:22, Qur'an 38:60] and the stones [that you take as deities, Qur'an 21:98, Qur'an 37:22 Qur'an 38:60], prepared for the infidels.
And give good tidings [O Muhammad] to those who believed and worked the righteous deeds; that they will have gardens [in Paradise] flowing from beneath which are the rivers. Whenever they are provided from it a livelihood of fruit, they will say, "This is what we were provided with before." And they are brought with it, a looksake [of that]. And they will have therein purified spouses, and they will abide therein eternally.
Indeed, Allah is not timid to present an example of a mosquito [a weak military force of the truth against a powerful force of falsehood] or what is above it [towards smaller direction, a weaker military force]. And as for those who believed, so they know that it is the truth from their Lord. But as for those who disbelieved, so they say, "What did Allah intend by this as an example [mosquito, smaller than that]?" He misleads many thereby and guides many thereby [through their failures and successes, respectively]. And He misleads not except the defiantly disobedient [zealot Jews and their fooled Greco-Roman white supremacist],
Who break the covenant of Allah after contracting it and sever that which Allah has ordered therein [kinship with Abraham, Ishmael (as) Qur'an 2:135, Qur'an 3:67] to be joined and cause corruption [shirk, all kind of isms, deviancy] on earth. It is those, they are the losers [not the Mosquitoes].
How can you disbelieve in Allah when you were Dead, then He gave life to you; then He will cause you to Die, then He will bring you to life [again], and then to Him you will be returned.
It is He who created for you whatever is on the earth, altogether. Moreover He turned, settled, switched, prepared up the nearest heaven and formed the earth and nearest heaven into seven heavens; and He is about everything all-Knowing.
And [mention,] when your Lord said to the angels, "Indeed, I will set up a vicegerent on the Earth." They said, "Why would You set up therein one who will spread corruption therein and shed the blood, while we glorify you with Your praises and sanctify You?" Allah said, "Indeed, I know that which you do not know."
And He taught Adam the names, all of them. Then He presented them to the angels, and said, "Inform Me about the names of these, if you are truthful."
They said, "Exalted are You; we have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed it is You, You are the All-Knowing, the All-Wise."
He said, "O Adam, inform them about their names." And when he informed them of their names, He said, "Did I not tell you [O angels], indeed, I know the unseen of the heavens and the earth, and I know what you reveal [Qur'an 2:30] and what you were hiding [none welcomes a competitor]."
And when We said to the angels [to overcome what they hid], "Prostrate before Adam". So they prostrated, except for Iblees. He refused and was arrogant and was to be of the infidels.
And We said, "O Adam, dwell, you and your kind, in Paradise and eat from it freely wherever both of you will, but do not approach this tree, so both of you will be of the oppressors."
So Satan made them to slip from it, and he exited both of them out of what [clothed condition] they were in. And We said, "Go down, some of you enemies to some others. And you will have in the earth a place of settlement and provision for a time."
Then Adam received from his Lord [some] words. So He relented, upon him [Qur'an 20:122]. Indeed, He, He is the Acceptor of repentance, the Merciful.
We said, "Go down from it, you [Iblees, Adam, Eve] altogether. So whenever there shall come to you from Me a guidance, then whoever follows My guidance, there will be no fear upon them, nor will they grieve.
And those who disbelieved [in the supplied guidance] and belied in Our verses; those will be companions of the Fire; they will abide therein forever."
O Children of Israel, remember My favour which I have bestowed upon you. [You must] fulfill My covenant [outlined in Qur'an 2:41, Qur'an 2:43] I will fulfill your covenant [granting all the helps Qur'an 2:45], and so fear only Me.
And believe in what I have sent down confirming to that [Qur'an 2:40] which is with you, and be not the first to disbelieve in it [Qur'an]. And do not exchange My signs for a small price [Jewish supremacy], and so fear only Me.
And do not mix the truth with the falsehood and do not conceal the truth while you know [Qur'an 2:40].
And establish the prayers and give the zakah and bow with those who bow [in worship and obedience].
How you are ordering the people about the righteousness, and forgetting yourselves, and you are reciting the book? So will you not be reasoning to understand [the book lost the balance, Qur'an 57:25].
And seek help with patience and prayers, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive ones
Those who think that they will meet their Lord, and that they will return to Him.
O Children of Israel, remember My favour that I bestowed upon you, and that I favoured you over the worlds.
And fear a Day when no soul will avail on another soul a thing, nor will be accepted from it any intercession, nor will be taken from it any redemption, nor will they be helped.
And [remember] when We saved you from the people of Pharaoh. They were afflicting you with the horrible torment, slaughtering your sons and keeping your females alive. And in that was a great trial from your Lord.
And [remember] when We cracked the [frozen, Qur'an 44:24] sea by your [prayers, weights, motion, prophet Moses's staff] and saved you and drowned the people of Pharaoh while you were looking on [from the top of the frozen layer, Qur'an 20:78].
And when We made an appointment with Moses for forty nights. Then you took the calf [to worship] after him, and you were oppressors.
Then We pardoned you after that, perhaps you may be grateful [Qur'an 7:155].
And [remember] when We gave Moses the Book and the criterion; perhaps you may be guided.
And [remember] when Moses said to his people, "O my people, indeed you have oppressed your souls by your taking of the calf [for worship]. So repent to your Creator and kill your desires. That is best for you in the sight of your Creator." So He relented upon you; indeed, He is the Acceptor of repentance, the Merciful.
And [remember] when you said [to experience his experience Qur'an 7:143], "O Moses, we will not believe to you until we see Allah outright"; so the thunderbolt seized you while you were looking on.
Then We resurrected you after your death; perhaps you may be grateful.
And [remember] We shaded on you by the clouds and We sent down upon you manna and quails, [saying], "Eat from the good things whatever We have provided you." And they were not oppressing Us, but they were oppressing themselves.
And [remember] when We said, "Enter this town and eat from it wherever you will in abundance, and enter the gate prostrating. And say, `Unburden.' We will forgive your sins for you, and soon We will increase the good-doers of good [in favour]."
So those who oppressed changed [every of] a saying other than what had been said to them [to defend their oppression]. So We sent down upon those who oppressed a punishment from the sky, by what they were defiantly disobeying [Qur'an 7:162].
And [remember] when Moses asked for water for his people, so We said, "Strike with your staff the rock." Then there gushed forth from it twelve springs. And indeed every people knew their drinking-place. "Eat and drink from the provision of Allah, and do not act wickedly in the earth, spreading corruption."
And when you said, "O Moses, we will not endure one food. So call for us to your Lord to go for us for what the earth grows [in Egypt]: of the green herbs and its cucumbers and its garlic and its lentils and its onions." [Moses] said, "Would you exchange that which is inferior by that which is good [in worldly produce]? Go to Egypt, then indeed, you will have what you have asked." Although there were struck upon them the humiliation, and the misery [in Egypt] and they returned here with anger of Allah. That was for that [worldly things], they were disbelieving in the verses of Allah and were killing the prophets, by other than the truth. That was in what they disobeyed and were transgressing.
Indeed, those who believed [in the verses of Allah] and those [inheritors of those killers, Qur'an 2:61] who [quenched Allah's anger through the greatest verse, Qur'an, to truly] became Jews or the Christians or the Sabeans, whoever [in likewise steps] believed in Allah and the Last Day and worked righteous works, they will have their reward from their Lord, and no fear will there be on them, nor will they grieve.
And [remember] when We took your covenant, while We raised above you the mount: "Hold to what We have brought you by force [against your will] and remember what is in it [the Torah]; perhaps you may fear [Qur'an 7:171]."
Then you turned away after that. So if not for the favour of Allah upon you [considering it was imposed against free will] and His mercy, you would be instantly of the losers.
And certainly you [Jews] already knew those who transgressed from you concerning the sabbath. So We said to them, "Be apes, despised."
So We made it a deterrent punishment for what was between its hands [past time] and what was behind it [later times], and a lesson [past generations, as torah was imposed, all their transgressions were excused, but no more for present or later as free will applies there] for those who guard [against evil].
And [remember] when Moses said to his people, "Indeed, Allah commands you to slay a cow." They said, "Do you take us in mockery?" He said, "I seek refuge in Allah lest I become of the ignorant ones."
They said, "Call for us to your Lord to make clear to us what she is." [Moses] said, "[Allah] says, `It is a cow which is neither old nor virgin, but a middle in between of that,' so do what you are commanded."
They said, "Call for us to your Lord to make clear to us what is her colour." He said, "Indeed, He says, `It is a yellow cow, bright in colour, pleasing to the observers.'"
They said, "Call for us to your Lord to make clear to us what it is. Indeed, all the cows look alike upon us. And indeed we, if Allah wills, will be guided."
He said, "He says, `It is a cow neither trained to plow the earth nor to irrigate the field, sound, no blemish in it.' " They said, "Now you have come with the truth." So they slaughtered her, but they were almost not doing it.
And [this was] when you [Israelites] slew one soul and disputed concerning its killer, but Allah was to bring out that which you were hiding.
So [to bring that out] We said, "Strike him [the slain man] with part of her [the slain cow]." Thus does Allah gives life to the dead; and He shows you His signs that perhaps you may reason.
Then your hearts became hardened after that, being like rocks, or even harder. For indeed, from some rocks rivers gush forth, and some split open and water goes out from it, and some sink in fear of Allah. And Allah is not unaware about what you are working.
What for, you [believers] are expecting that they would be faithful to you? And there was a party of them, were hearing the words of Allah and then they distorted it [the Torah] after they had reasoned it and they were knowing?
And when they meet those who believed, they said, "We believed," but when some of them go aside to some others, they said, "Do you tell them about what Allah had opened [the charge] against you so that they debate with you by it [a verse, confirming Qur'an 2:75] from your Lord?" Then will you not reason [to see that party in Qur'an 2:75 from this party in Qur'an 2:76]?
Do they not know that Allah knows what they conceal [disbelief] and what they declare [belief, Qur'an 2:76]?
And from them are uneducated ones who do not know the Book except wishes [of the educated ones of the past, Qur'an 2:59] and they are left on nothing except guessing [warm guesses, Qur'an 2:80, Qur'an 2:94, Qur'an 2:111].
So Woe to those who were writing the book with their own hands [Qur'an 2:59], then saying, "This is from Allah," in order to exchange it for a small price [Jewish supremacy]. Woe to them for what their hands had written and woe to them for what they have been earning [uneducated Jews, Qur'an 2:78, liers, Qur'an 2:75, transgressors, Qur'an 2:65, killers, beliers, Qur'an 2:61, warm guessers, Qur'an 2:80, warrior aginst the truth, Qur'an 5:64].
And they said, "The Fire will not touch us, except a numbered days." Say, "Have you taken a pledge from Allah? For Allah does not break His pledge. Or you say upon Allah that which you do not know."
No but is there [they do say without knowing]. Whoever earned evil [warm guesses, Qur'an 2:78] and his sins shrouded him; so those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein for ever.
And those who believed and worked the righteous deeds, those are the companions of Paradise; they will abide therein eternally.
And [remember] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel: "Do not worship except Allah; and for the parents do good and welcoming relatives, and orphans, and the needy; and speak to the people good [words], and establish the prayer and bring the zakah." Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you were refusing.
And [remember] when We took your covenant: "You shall not shed your blood and you shall not drive out yourselves from your homes." Then you acknowledged and you were witnesses.
Then, you are those who are killing yourselves, and driving out a party from your [people] from their homes, cooperating against them in the sin and the aggression. And if they come to you as captives, you ransom them, although it was forbidden upon you, their driving out. So do you believe in part of the Book and disbelieve in part? Then what is the recompense for he who does that from you except disgrace in the worldly life? And on the Day of Resurrection they will be sent back to the severest of punishment. And Allah is not unaware about what you are working.
Those [killed ones, evicted ones, captives] were the ones who exchanged the life of the world for the Hereafter. And the punishment will not be lightened about those terrors [Qur'an 2:85], nor will they be helped.
And certainly We already brought in Moses, the Book [laws, ordinances], and followed up after him with the messengers. And We brought in Jesus, the son of Mary, the proofs [of that Book], and supported him with the Pure Spirit. What for, that every time a messenger came to you [Israelites], with what your souls did not desire, you grew arrogant? And a party [of messengers] you belied and another party you killed.
And they said, "Our hearts are wrapped [in pride]." No but is there! Allah has cursed them by their disbelief, so little is what they believe.
And when there came to them a Book from Allah confirming that [prophet] which was with them [in their prayer], although they were before praying for victory against those who disbelieved [through coming of that Prophet] - but [then] when there came to them that which they recognized, they disbelieved in him [prophet Muhammad]; so the curse of Allah will be upon the infidels.
Evil is what in which they sold their souls [i.e., the Jewish supremacy], that they would disbelieve in what Allah has sent down in [their] outrage that Allah sent down from His favour upon whom He wills from His slaves. So they returned with anger upon anger. And for the infidels is a humiliating punishment.
And when it was said to them, "Believe in what Allah has sent down," they said, "We believe in what was sent down to us [only Jews]." But they were disbelieving in whatever came before it [with their Jewish prophets], and it is the truth confirming for that [charge] whichever is with them. Say, "Then why were you killing the prophets of Allah before, if you were believers [were they not your `us']?"
And certainly Moses already came to you with the proofs. Then you took the calf [in worship] after him, and you were oppressors.
And when We took your covenant and raised above you the mount [saying], "Hold to what We have brought you forcefully [against free-will] and hear." They said, "We hear and disobey." And they had to drink in their hearts [the faith on] the calf, as [Allah had to take Torah back] for their rejection. Say, "How wretched is that which your faith enjoins upon you [taking Torah back to support your free will], if you were believers."
Say [O Muhammad], "If the home of the Hereafter with Allah is for you exclusively; rather than all mankind's, then wish the death, if you are truthful.
But they will not wish for it, ever, by what their hands have forwarded [against the hereafter]. And Allah is Knowing about the oppressors.
And you will surely find them, the most greedy of mankind upon life, and [even] more than those who are polytheists. Each of them wishes if he could be granted life a thousand years. But it would not remove him from the punishment that he should be granted life. And Allah is Seeing about what they are working.
Say [O Muhammad to] whoever was to be an enemy to Gabriel for sure, as he brought its sending down upon your heart by permission of Allah, "Self-confirming is, what is in between its two hands, and its guidance and all the good tidings, for the believers."
Whoever was to be an enemy to Allah, and His angels, and His messengers, and Gabriel, and Michael? For sure, Allah is an enemy to the infidels.
And certainly We already sent down to you [O Muhammad] proof verses, but not except the defiantly disobedient cult disbelieves in them.
What but is there [that] every time they took a covenant, a party of them threw it away? No but is there! Most of them are not believing.
And when there came to them a messenger [Solomon, Qur'an 2:102] from Allah confirming what was with them, a party of those who were given the Book, threw the Book of Allah behind their backs as if they were not knowing [Qur'an 2:100].
And they followed what the devils [from them] were reciting over the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils [from them] disbelieved, teaching the people magic and what was sent down upon the two angels in Babylon, Harut and Marut. But the two angels were teaching no one until they said, "We are a test, so do not disbelieve." But they [devils from them] learn from them by what they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they were harming by it none except by permission of Allah. And they were learning what harms them and does not benefit them. And certainly they already knew that whoever purchases it [the magic] will not have in the Hereafter any share. And wretched was with what they sold their souls, if they only knew.
And if that they [the people, Qur'an 2:101] had believed and guarded [against evil], surely the reward from Allah would be goodness, if they were knowing.
O you who believed, do not say, "Ra'ina" but say, "Unthurna" and heed. And for the infidels is a painful punishment.
Neither those who disbelieved from the people of the Book nor the polytheists would like, that any good should be sent down upon you from your Lord. And Allah chooses by His mercy whom He wills, and Allah is the possessor of the greatest bounty.
Any revelation whatever it may be, We abrogate [Qur'an 13:39] or cause it to be forgotten [Qur'an 25:18], We bring about [one] better than it or similar to it. Do you [O Muhammad] not know that Allah is competent over everything?
Do you [O Muhammad] not know that to Allah belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and [that] you have not other than Allah any protector or any helper?
Or do you intend to ask your Messenger as Moses was asked before? And whoever exchanges the disbelief [in those hypocrites terms e.g., the belief in God] by the belief [in their terms, e.g., the belief in Calf], so he has certainly strayed from the soundness of the way.
Many of the people of the Book would wish if they could turn you back to disbelief, after your faith out of envy from themselves, after what the truth is -- became manifest to them. So [O Muslims] pardon and overlook, till Allah brings His command [Qur'an 30:2-4]. Indeed, Allah is over everything competent.
And establish the prayer and give the zakah, and whatever good you put forward for yourselves, you will find it with Allah. Indeed, Allah is all seeing about what you are working.
And they say, "None will enter Paradise except who is a Jew or a Christian." That is their lying. Say, "Produce your proof, if you are truthful."
No but is there [as being their lies]; Whosoever submits his face to Allah and is a good-doer, then he will have his reward with his Lord; and no fear will there be on those, nor will they grieve.
The Jews said, "The Christians are on nothing," and the Christians said, "The Jews are on nothing," although they [both] recite the Book. Thus those who do not know [the Book, using their common sense] said similar to their sayings [may be the `Book' itself is on nothing]. So Allah will establish between them [Jews and Christians] on the Day of Resurrection this [common sense] wherein they were differing.
And who are more oppressive than those [educated ultra conservative parties] who prevent the name of Allah from being mentioned in His mosques [Al-Aqsa, Ibrahimi], and strive on their destruction. It is not for them to enter these states except in fear [of Islam, Islamophobia]. For them in this world is disgrace [total failure of ancient civilization restoration projects], and they will have in the Hereafter a great punishment.
And to Allah belongs the east and the west. So wherever you [O Islamophobes] turn, Allah's Face is there. Indeed, Allah is all-Encompassing, All-Knowing.
And they said, "Allah has taken a son." Subhan [far away from such] is He. No but is there [in Him being Subhan, Qur'an 5:101, Qur'an 40:57], to Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth; all are devoutly obedient to Him,
[He is the] Originator of the heavens and the earth. And whenever He decrees a matter, He only says to it, "Be," and it is.
Those who do not know [history] said, "If only Allah would speak to us or a sign brought us?" Thus spoke those before them alike their saying [Qur'an 2:55 to depreciate Moses]. Their hearts are alike. Already We made the verses manifest to a people who are certain [in faith].
Indeed, We have sent you [O Muhammad] with the truth as a good news, and a warner. And you will not be questioned regarding the companions of Hellfire.
And the Jews and the Christians will not be pleased on you [O Muhammad], until you follow their religion. Say, "Indeed, the guidance of Allah is the [only] guidance." If you follow their desires after what has come to you of the knowledge, there will be for you from Allah no protector, nor helper.
Those whom We have given the Book [Qur'an] are reading it, being true to its recital, those are firmly believing in it. And whoever disbelieves in it, so those, they are the losers.
O Children of Israel, remember My favour which I have bestowed upon you, and that I preferred you over the worlds.
And fear a Day when no soul will avail on another soul in anything, nor any compensation will be accepted from it, nor any intercession will benefit it, nor will they be helped.
And [remember] when Abraham was tested by his Lord with words, and he fulfilled them. [Allah] said, "Indeed, I will set up you as an Imam [leader] for the people." [Abraham] said, "And of my descendants?" [Allah] said, "The oppressors will not get my covenant."
And [mention] when We made the House as a place of return for the people, and [a place of] security; [We ordered]: "And take the establishment of Abraham as a place of prayer." And We took to Abraham and Ishmael in the covenant that: "Purify My House for the Tawaf performers, and the ones secluded [for worship], and the ones bowing, prostrating [in prayer]."
And [remember] when Abraham said, "O My Lord, make this a secure town, and provide its people livelihood from the fruits, whoever of them believed in Allah and the Last Day." [Allah] said. "And whoever disbelieved, I will grant him enjoyment for a little; then I will force him to the punishment of the Fire; and wretched is the destiny."
And [mention] when Abraham was raising the foundations of the House with Ishmael, [praying]: "Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed You are the Hearing, the Knowing.
Our Lord, and make both of us, submissive to You, and from our descendants a nation submissive to You. And show us our rites [pleasing to You] and relent upon us. Indeed You, You are the Relenting, the Merciful.
Our Lord, and send forth in them a messenger from them who will recite upon them Your verses, and teach them the Book, and the wisdom, and purify them. Indeed, You are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise."
And who can turn away from the religion of Abraham, except one who fooled himself out [of racial supremacy blindness]. And certainly We already chose him in this world, and indeed he, in the Hereafter, will surely be of the righteous.
When his Lord said to him, "Submit", he said "I have submitted [in Islam] to the Lord of the worlds."
And Abraham enjoined his sons [to do the same] and [so did] Jacob, [saying], "O my sons, indeed Allah has chosen for you the religion, so do not die except while you are Muslims."
Or were you [believers] witnesses when death approached Jacob, when he said to his sons, "What will you worship after me?" They said, "We will worship your God for being your forefathers Abraham's, and Ishmael's, and Isaac's God; One God. And we are Muslims [in submission] to Him."
That was a nation already has passed away. What it earned belonged to it, and what you have earned will belong to you [O Muslims]. And you will not be asked about what they were working.
They said, "Be Jews or Christians, you [O muslims] will be guided." Say, "No but would be there if the religion of Abraham as a Monotheist was there, but he was not of those who associated partners with Allah [e.g., Jews Qur'an 16:51; Christians Qur'an 5:73 unfortunately]."
Say [O Muslims], "We believed in Allah; and in what was sent down to us; and in what was sent down to Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the Descendants, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus; and in what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We make no discrimination between any of them, and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him."
So if they [Jews and Christians] believed in like what you [Muslims] have believed therein [Qur'an 2:136], then indeed, they are rightly guided. But if they turned away, then they are only in schism, and soon Allah will suffice you [O Muhammad] against them. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
[Say, O Muslims, we seek], "Colour of Allah [correlating us with prophet Muhammad, Qur'an 2:137]. And who is better than Allah at colouring [correlating people with their messengers]. And we are worshippers of Him."
Say, [O Muhammad], "Do you debate with us concerning Allah, while He is our Lord and your Lord, and our deeds belong to us, and your deeds belong to you, and we are sincere to Him?"
Or do you say that Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the Descendants were Jews or Christians? Say, "Are you more knowing or is Allah?" And who is more oppressor than one who suppressed a testimony he has from Allah? And Allah is not unaware of what you were working.
That was a nation which has passed away; what it earned belonged to it, and what you have earned belong to you [O Muslims]. And you [Muslims] will not be asked on what they were working.
The fool from the people will say, "What has turned them away from their qiblah, which they were upon?" Say, "To Allah belongs the east and the west. He guides whom He wills to a straight path."
And thus we have made you a balanced community that you will be witnesses over the people, and the Messenger will be a witness over you. And We did not make the qiblah which you were upon, except that We may know who follow the Messenger from who turn back on his heels. And indeed, it is difficult except for those whom Allah has guided. And Allah would not let your faith to be lost. Indeed Allah is, to the people, Kind, Merciful.
We certainly see the turning of your face, [O Muhammad] in the heaven. So We will surely turn you to a qiblah that will please you. So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-haram. And wherever in whatever [prayer] you are, turn your faces toward it. And indeed, those who were given the Book surely know that it is the truth from their Lord. And Allah is not unaware of what they are working.
And if you brought to those who were given the Book every sign, they would not follow your qiblah. Nor are you to be a follower of their qiblah. Nor some of you are to be followers of some others' qiblah. So if you followed their desires after what has come to you of the knowledge, indeed, you [O Muhammad] would then surely be of the oppressors.
Those to whom We had given the Book recognize him as they recognize their own sons. And indeed, a party of them conceal the truth while they know.
The truth is from your Lord, so [O Muhammad] do not be one of the doubters.
And for every one has a destination, he is steering himself with, so race for the good destination. Wherever in whatever [destinations] you are, Allah will bring you altogether. Indeed, Allah is over everything competent.
So from wherever you go forth [for prayer, O Muhammad] turn your face toward al- Masjid al-haram, and indeed, it is the truth from your Lord. And Allah is not unaware of what you are working.
And from wherever you [O believer] go out, turn your face toward al-Masjid al-haram. And wherever in whatever [prayer] you [people] are, turn your faces toward it, that there will not for the people against you a wrangle, except those oppressed from them. So fear them not but fear Me and that I will complete My favour upon you and perhaps, you may be guided.
Just like We have sent within you [as a favour] a messenger from you reciting upon you Our verses and purifying you and teaching you the Book and wisdom and teaching you what you did not know.
So remember Me; I will remember you. And thank Me and do not reject Me.
O you who believed, seek help through patience and prayers. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
And do not say with regard to whoever is killed in the way of Allah as you [people] are dead. No but is there! You are alive, but you do not feel [Qur'an 47:4-6].
And surely We will test you with something from the fear, and the hunger, and a loss of wealth, and souls and fruits. And give good tidings to the patient ones.
Those who when there befell on them a calamity, they said, "Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return."
Those, upon them are prayers [blessings] from their Lord and mercy. And those, they are the guided ones.
Indeed, as-safa and al-Marwah are from the symbols of Allah. So whoever did Hajj to the House or did the Umrah, there is no blame upon him that he walks in between them. And whoever volunteered goodness, for sure, Allah is appreciative, Knowing.
Indeed, those who hide what We sent down of the proofs and the guidance, after We made it [Hajj] manifest to the people in the Book [its history, Qur'an 2:125, Qur'an 2:127, Qur'an 2:158; rulings, Qur'an 2:196; corruptions, Qur'an 2:189], those, Allah curses them and the cursers curse them.
Except for those who repented and reformed and made [the truth of Hajj] manifest. So those, I will relent upon them, and I am the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.
Indeed, those who disbelieved and died while they were infidels, those upon them is the curse of Allah and of the angels and the people, altogether;
Abiding eternally therein. The punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be delayed.
And [remember] your God is God Alone. There is no God except Him, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth; and in the difference of the night and the day; and the ships that run through the sea with what benefits the people; and what Allah has sent down from the heavens of water, so He gives life to the earth therewith after its death and dispersing therein of every moving creatures, and the way He guides the winds and clouds between the heaven and the earth. [In all these] have signs for those who reason.
And from the people is he who takes other than Allah, equals. They love them as they [should] love Allah. But those who believe [i.e., muslims] are stronger in love for Allah. And if only those who oppressed consider, when they see the punishment [on those equals], [they will be certain] that all power belongs to Allah and that Allah is severe in the punishment.
When those who have been followed disassociate themselves from those who followed them while they saw the punishment, and [by default] to cut off wihtin them, the ties [as follows].
And those who followed said, "If that there was a return for us, then we will disassociate ourselves from them as they have disassociated themselves from us." Thus will Allah show them their works as regrets upon them. And they are not exit out from the Fire.
O mankind, eat from what is Halal and a good thing on the earth and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you an obvious enemy.
[Satan] only enjoys you in the evil and the obscenity and that you speak against Allah what you do not know.
And when it is said to them, "Follow what Allah has sent [brought] down," they said, "No but is there! We are following what we found upon it [the bringing down, Qur'an 2:200], our fathers." What for except, it was their fathers not understanding a thing, nor they were guided?
And the example of those who disbelieved is like the example of one who shouts about what he hears nothing except a scream, and a cry. Deaf, dumb, and blind, so they do not understand [vocabulary].
O you who believed, eat from the good things whatever We have provided for you and give thanks to Allah if you worship Him alone.
He has only forbidden upon you the dead animals, and the blood, and the flesh of swine, and what was dedicated by it, to other than Allah. But whoever is forced [by necessity], not desiring, nor exceeding, then there shall be no sin upon him. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
Indeed, those who conceal what Allah has sent down of the Book [like Qur'an 2:170] and exchange it for a small price [friendship between Qur'an 2:171 and Qur'an 2:14]; those [hypocrites] they are not eating in their bellies except the Fire. And Allah will not speak to them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them. And for them is a painful punishment.
Those are the ones who have exchanged the astray [in those hypocrites' terms, i.e., the guidance] by the guidance [in their terms, i.e., the astray], and the punishment [in their terms, i.e., the forgiveness] by the forgiveness [in their terms, i.e., the punishment Qur'an 2:16]. So was what, they pursued all about, upon the Fire.
That is because Allah has sent down the Book in the truth. And indeed, those who disputed in the Book [Qur'an] would always be in deep inward schism.
The righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west. But the righteousness is [in] one who believed in Allah, and the Last Day, and the angels, and the Book, and the prophets. And he gives wealth against his love he has for it, to welcoming peoples, and the orphans, and the needy, and a traveler, and those who ask [for help], and in [freeing] the necks [slaves]; and establishes the prayer and gives the zakah; [those who] fulfill their covenant when they covenant; and [those who] are patient in the poverty and the hardship and time of battle. Those are the ones who are true [to themselves], and those, they are the ones who guard [against evil].
O you who believed, it was written upon you, the retribution concerning the murdered - the free for the free, the slave for the slave, and the female for the female. But whoever is pardoned for this crime for a thing from his brother, then there should be a suitable follow-up and payment to him with good conduct. That is an alleviation from your Lord and a mercy. But whoever transgresses after that, then for him, there is a painful punishment.
And there is for you in the retribution, a life, O you [people] of understanding, that you may guard [your consciousness of Allah].
It is written upon you: when the death approaches one of you, if he leaves good amount of wealth, a bequest for the parents and welcoming relatives in the fairness, being true upon those who are righteous.
Then whoever alters it [the bequest] after he has heard it, so only its sin would be upon those who have altered it. Indeed, Allah is Hearing, Knowing.
So whoever fears from the bequeather, an error or a sin and he reconciles what is between them, then there is no blame upon him. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
O you who believed, written upon you the fasting as it was written upon those before you that, perhaps you may guard easily [against evil],
For a numbered days. But whoever of you is ill or on a journey, then an equal number from other days. And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship, either fast or] - a ransom of feeding one poor person [per missing day]. And whoever volunteers for more good, it is better for him. But to fast is best for you, if you know.
The month of Ramadhan is one in which the Qur'an was sent down as a guidance for mankind, and as proofs of the guidance, and as the criterion. So whoever from you witnesses the month, then he shall fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days. Allah wants ease with you and does not want with you the hardship and that you complete the number and that you glorify Allah on that which He has guided you [i.e., for the Qur'an]; and perhaps you may be thankful [for getting the greatest favour of history, the Qur'an].
And when My slaves ask you, [O Muhammad] about Me, then indeed, I am there welcoming [calls]. I answer the caller's call when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me and believe in Me, that perhaps they may be rightly guided.
Permitted for you the night preceding fasting to go to your wives [for intercourse]. They are garments for you and you are garments for them. Allah knows that you were deceiving yourselves, so He relented upon you and bestowed forgiveness on you. So now, have relations with them and seek that which Allah has written for you. And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread. Then complete the fast until the sunset. And do not have sexual relations with them while you are secluded for worship in the mosques (I’tikaf, either day or night). These are the limits [set by] Allah, so do not approach them. Thus Allah makes His verses manifest to the people that they may become righteous.
And do not consume your wealth between yourselves wrongfully or offer thereby to [bribe] the authorities so that you may consume a portion of the wealth of the people sinfully, while you know.
They ask you [O Muhammad] about the crescents. Say, "They are measurements of time for the people and for the Hajj." And it is not the righteousness that you come to the houses from its backs, but righteousness is he who fears [Allah]. And [so] come to the houses from their doors and guard your consciousness of Allah that, perhaps you may succeed.
And fight in the way of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not love the transgressors.
And kill them [Qur'an 2:190] wherever you overtake them and drive them out from wherever they drove you out. And the testing [on your forbearance] is worse than killing. And do not fight them on al-Masjid al- haram until they fight you therein. So if they fight you, then slay them. Such is the recompense of the infidels.
So if they cease, so indeed, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
And fight them until there is no testing [on your forbearance] and the religion becomes for Allah. Then if they desist, then let there be no aggression except against the oppressors.
The month, [by] the sacred deed in the month becomes the sacred, and [hence] all the violations is legal retribution. So whoever transgressed against you, then transgress against him in the proportionate scale that which he transgressed against you. And fear Allah and know that Allah is with those who guard their consciousness [of Him].
And spend in the way of Allah and do not cast [your consciousness of Allah] with your hands into destruction [by being stingy]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the good-doers.
And complete the Hajj and Umrah for Allah. But if you are prevented, then [offer] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And do not shave your heads until the sacrificial animal has reached its place of slaughter. And whoever from you is ill or has an ailment of the head [making shaving necessary must offer] a ransom of fasting [three days] or charity or sacrifice. And when you are secure, then whoever profits by joining the Hajj to Umrah then make whatever the sacrificial offering you can afford. And whoever cannot afford [that offering] - then a fast of three days during Hajj and of seven when you have returned [home]. Those are ten complete [days]. This is for those whose family is not in the area of al-Masjid al-haram. And fear Allah and know that Allah is severe in penalty.
Hajj is in well-known months. Whoever then undertake [to perform] the Hajj therein [by entering the state of ihram], let there is no sexual intercourse nor wickedness nor quarreling during the Hajj. And whatever of goodness you do, Allah knows it. And take provisions, for sure, the best provision is righteousness. And guard your consciousness of Me, O possessors of understanding.
There is no blame upon you that you are seeking a bounty from your Lord [on your Hajj journey]. But when you depart from Arafat, you should be on Al Mash'ar, Al haram, remembering Allah. And remember Him as He has guided you, even though you were before this of the astray ones.
Then depart from wherever the people departed and ask forgiveness of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
So when you have completed your rites, then remember Allah as you remember your fathers or a more intense remembrance. And from the people whoever says, "Our Lord, bring to us [excellence] in this world," and he will have in the Hereafter, no share.
And from them who says, "Our Lord, bring to us excellence in this world and excellence in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire."
Those will have a share for what they have earned, and Allah is swift in reckoning.
And remember Allah in the numbered days. So whoever hastens [his departure] in two days, so there is no sin upon him; and whoever delays, so there is no sin upon him, for the one who fears. And revere Allah and know that to Him you all will be gathered.
And of the people is one whose speech concerning the wordly life pleases you, and he calls Allah to witness over what is in his heart; while he is the most quarrelsome of opponents.
And when he turns away [from you], he strives throughout the land to spread corruption in culture therein and destroys the tilth and the descendants. And Allah does not love the spoilers.
And when it is said to him, "Fear Allah," pride in the sin takes firm hold of him. So sufficient for him is Hellfire, and surely wretched is the resting place.
And of the people is he who sells his self for seeking pleasure of Allah. And Allah is kind with the slaves.
O you who believed, enter into the peace collectively and do not follow the footsteps of Satan [generating divisions]. Indeed, he is to you an open enemy.
So if you slipped [into sectarianism] after whatever of the proofs came to you, then know that Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
Are they [Qur'an 2:209] waiting except that there comes to them Allah in the canopies of the clouds, and the angels, and the [disputed] matter is settled? But to Allah all the matters are returned.
[O Muhammad,] ask the Children of Israel how many of proof verses We have given them? And whoever changes the favour of Allah after what [verses whose meanings are absolutely clear] has come to him? So indeed, Allah is severe in punishment.
Beautified for those who disbelieved, is the life of this world, and they mock those who believed. But those who guard their consciousness of [Allah] will be above them on the Day of Resurrection. And Allah provides livelihood to whom He wills without reckoning.
Mankind was once one religion [before religion brought power, power brought corruption, corruption corrupted religion]. So Allah sent the prophets as bringers of good tidings and warners and sent down with them the Book in the truth to establish between the people this [one religion] in which they divided. And what caused to differ therein [further] except the jealous animosity between themselves -- those who were given the Book after what came to them, the proofs? But Allah guided those who believed regarding what they differed therein of the truth, by His permission. And Allah guides whom He wills to a straight path.
Or do you think that you will enter the Paradise while has not come to you an example of those who passed away before you? The misery afflicted them and the hardship and were shaken until [their] messenger and those who believed with him said, "When is the help of Allah?" Verily, the help of Allah is surely welcoming [you].
They ask you, [O Muhammad], what they should spend. Say, "Whatever you spend of good is for the parents, and the relatives, and the orphans, and the needy, and the travelers. And whatever you do of good, for sure, Allah is All-Knowing about it."
Fighting is written upon you while it is hateful to you. But perhaps that you hate a thing while it is good for you; and perhaps that you love a thing while it is bad for you. And Allah Knows and you do not know.
They ask you on fighting in the sacred month. Say, "Fighting therein is great [sin], but obstructing [people] from the way of Allah and disbelief in Him and [in the sanctity of] al-Masjid al-haram and the exiting out its people form it are greater [evil] in the sight of Allah. And this type of test is worse than killing." And they will not cease to fight you until they turn you away from your religion if they are able. And whoever of you apostatize from his religion and dies while he is an infidel - for those, their deeds have become worthless in this world and the Hereafter, and those are the companions of the Fire, they will abide therein for ever.
Indeed, those who believed and those who emigrated and strove in the Way of Allah; those, they hope for the mercy of Allah. And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
They ask you on the intoxicant and the gambling. Say, "In both of them is a great sin and [a little] benefit for people. But there sinfulness is greater than their benefits." And they ask you on what they should spend. Say, "The surplus." Thus Allah makes the verses manifest to you; perhaps you may ponder.
In this world and the Hereafter. And they ask you on the orphans. Say, "Improvement for them is best. And if you mix your affairs with theirs, then they are your brothers. And Allah knows the corrupter from the amender. And if Allah had willed, He could have put you in difficulty. Indeed, Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
And do not marry polytheistic women until they have believed. And a believing slave woman is better than a polytheist, even if she pleases you. And do not marry polytheistic men [to your female] until they have believed. And a believing slave [man] is better than a polytheist, even if he pleases you. Those invite [you] to the Fire, but Allah invites to Paradise and to forgiveness by His own permission. And He [by His own grace] makes His verses manifest to the people that perhaps they may remember.
And they ask you on the menstruation. Say, "It is harmful, so keep away from the women during the menstruation. And do not approach them until they are clean. So when they are clean, then come to them from where Allah has enjoyed you. Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who keep themselves clean."
Your women are a tilth for you, so come to your tilth, whenever you wish and put forth [righteousness] for yourselves. And guard your consciousness of Allah and know that you will meet Him. And give good tidings to the believers.
Do not set up [against] Allah, an excuse through your oaths keeping that: you continue doing good, and guarding consciousness of Allah, and making peace between the people. And Allah is Hearing, Knowing.
Allah does not take you to account by that which is unintentional in your oaths, but He takes you to account by that which your hearts have earned. And Allah is Forgiving, Forbearing.
For those who swear of their women, should lie low for four months. Thereafter if they should change their position, for sure, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
And if they resolve on the divorce, for sure, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
And the divorced women must wait with themselves for three periods [before remarrying], and it is not lawful for them to conceal what Allah has created in their wombs, if they believe in Allah and the Last Day. And their men have more right to take them back in this [period], if they want reconciliation. And for them [the women with regard to this right] is like that which is upon them [men with regard to this right] in reason. But the men have a degree over them. And Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
Divorce can be retracted twice. Then, either keep [her] in an acceptable manner or release [her] with good treatment. And it is not lawful for you that you take back from what you have given them anything, except if they both fear that they can not establish Allah's limits. So if you [Muslims] fear that they can not establish Allah's limits, then there is no blame upon either of them concerning that by which she ransoms herself. These are the limits of Allah, so do not transgress them. And whoever transgresses Allah's limits, those they are the oppressors.
So if he divorces her [for the third time], then she is not lawful to him afterward until [after] she marries a husband other than him. And if the latter husband divorces her, there is no sin on them to return together, if they think that they can establish the limits of Allah. These are the limits of Allah, He makes it manifest to a people who know.
And when you divorce women and they have reached the end of their waiting period, either take them back in a fair manner or release them in a fair manner. But do not keep them to harm, to transgress [against them]. And whoever does that has certainly oppressed himself. And do not take the verses of Allah in jest. And remember the favour of Allah upon you and what has sent down upon you of the Book and wisdom by which He instructs you. And fear Allah and know that Allah is about every thing All-Knowing.
And when you divorce women and they have reached their [waiting] term, then do not prevent them from re-marrying their ex-husbands if they agree between themselves on an equitable basis. That is instructed to whoever of you believes in Allah and the Last Day. That is more virtuous for you and purer, and Allah knows and you know not.
[Divorced] mothers may breastfeed their children two complete years for whoever wishes to complete the nursing [period]. And on the father, to him, is the mothers' provision and their clothing in a fair manner. No person should be burdened except its capacity. No mother should be suffered in her child, and no father in his child. And upon the [father's] heir is [a duty] like that [of the father]. And if both parents desire weaning through mutual consent and consultation, there is no blame upon either of them. And if you wish to have your children nursed by a substitute, there is no blame upon you as long as you give payment in a fair manner. And fear Allah and know that Allah is Seeing about what you are working.
And those from you who are recalled [from carrying on their genes] and leave wives [for failure in procreation, Qur'an 2:226, Qur'an 108:3, Qur'an 4:128, Qur'an 42:50], they [those wives] shall wait with themselves four months and ten days. And when they have fulfilled their term, then there is no blame upon you [former husbands] concerning whatever they might do concerning themselves in a fair manner. And Allah is aware about what you are working.
There is no blame upon you concerning what you propose therein of the women's engagement or you hide within yourselves. Allah knows that you will be thinking them. But do not meet them secretly except that you say an honorable saying. And do not determine to undertake a marriage contract until the decreed period is completed. And know that Allah knows what is in your souls, so beware of Him. And know that Allah is Forgiving, Forbearing.
There is no blame upon you if you divorced the women, what you have not touched of them nor specified a dowry for them. But give them [ex-wives] benefits, upon the wealthy as per his ability, and upon the poor as per his ability, a provision in a fair manner, a right upon the good-doers.
And if you divorced them before you have touched them and you have already specified a dowry for them, then give them half of what you have specified, except that they pardoned [their right] or the one in whose hand is the marriage contract pardons it. And that you pardon, it is nearer to the righteousness. And do not forget the bounty between you. Indeed Allah is with whatever you are working, a Seer.
Guard yourselves upon the prayers and the middle prayer and establish yourselves to Allah, as devotees.
But if you are in fear, then [pray] on foot or riding. But when you are safe, then remember Allah, as He has taught you what you were not knowing.
And those from you who are recalled [from carrying on their genes] and leave wives [for failure in procreation, Qur'an 2:226, Qur'an 108:3, Qur'an 4:128, Qur'an 42:50], for their wives is a bequest: maintenance till one year without expulsion. But if they go out [on their own will], then there is no blame upon you [former husbands] concerning whatever they might do concerning themselves of a fair manner. And Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
And for the divorced women is a provision as per what is reasonable, a right upon those who guard [against evil].
Thus does Allah clarify for you [people] His verses, perhaps you may use reason.
Have you [O Muhammad] not considered those who went out of their homes in many thousands, fearing death? So Allah said to them, "Die." Then He gave life to them. Indeed, Allah is the possessor of bounty upon mankind, but most of mankind do not thank.
And fight in the way of Allah and know that Allah is Hearer, Knowing.
Who is the one who would loan Allah a excellent loan, so He may multiply it for him manyfold? And it is Allah who decreases and increases wealth, and to Him you all will be returned.
Have you [O Muhammad] not considered the chief leaders from the Children of Israel after Moses when they said to a prophet of theirs, "Set for us a king, we will fight in the way of Allah?" He said, "Would you perhaps if the fighting was written upon you, you would not fight?" They said, "And what belongs to us that we should not fight in the way of Allah when already we were driven out from our homes along with our children?" Then when the fighting was written upon them, they turned away, except a few of them. And Allah is All-Knowing about the oppressors.
And their prophet said to them, "Indeed, Allah has sent to you Saul as a king." They said, "How can he have the kingship over us while we have more right regarding the kingship than him and he has not been brought abundance of wealth?" He said, "Indeed, Allah has selected him over you and increased him abundantly in knowledge and the body. And Allah gives His sovereignty to whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing, Knowing."
And their prophet said to them, "Indeed, a sign of Saul's kingship is that the [wooden] box will come to you wherein would be tranquilizers from your Lord and the rest of [the whitening, tranquilizing gels] that the family of Moses and the family of Aaron had left [Qur'an 28:32], will be carried by the angels. Indeed in that is a sign for you, if you were believers."
And when Saul departed with the armies, he said, "Indeed, Allah will be testing you with a river [angels caste therein the box, Qur'an 2:248]. So whoever drinks from it, will be not from me, and whoever does not taste it, then indeed he is from me, except for who takes [a sip] in the hollow of his one hand." But they drank from it, except a few of them [and became drowsy for overdose]. Then when he crossed it, he and those who believed with him, they said, "There is no power for us today with respect to Goliath and his armies." Those who were certain that they would meet Allah said, "How many of a small company have overcome a large company by Allah's permission. And Allah is with the patient ones."
And when they went forth to [face] Goliath and his armies, they said, "Our Lord, pour upon us patience and make firm our steps and give us victory against the disbelieving people."
So they defeated them by permission of Allah [as Goliath and his armies became tranquilized for drinking in excess there, Qur'an 2:249], and David killed Goliath, and Allah gave him the kingship and wisdom and taught him of what He willed. And if not for Allah repelling the people, some of them by some others, the earth would have been corrupted; but Allah is a possessor of bounty upon the worlds.
These are the verses of Allah which We recite upon you [O Muhammad], in the truth. And indeed, you are surely of the messengers.
Those messengers, We favoured some of them over some others. From them were those to whom Allah spoke, and He exalted some of them in degrees. And We gave Jesus, the Son of Mary, the proofs, and We supported him with the Pure Spirit. And If Allah had willed, those [generations] succeeding them would not have fought each other, after there came to them the proofs. But they disagreed, and some of them believed and some of them disbelieved. And if Allah had willed, they would not have fought each other, but Allah does whatever He wants.
O you who believed, spend for what We have provided you, before that, a Day comes wherein there will be neither trade nor friendship nor intercession. And the infidels, they are the oppressors.
Allah! There is no god except Him, the Ever-Living, the Ever-Lasting. Neither slumber overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is the one who can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows whatever is in between their hands [tangible worlds] and whatever is behind them [intangible worlds, Qur'an 6:1], and they encompass nothing about anything of His knowledge except about what He wills. His Chair extends the heavens and the earth, and the guarding of both of them tires Him not. And He is the High, the Great.
There shall be no compulsion in the religion. Certainly, the right way has become distinct from the wrong way. So whoever disbelieves in the Taghut [false god] and believes in Allah, he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold, which has no breaking off. And Allah is Hearing, Knowing.
Allah is the ally of those who believed. He brings them out from darknesses to the light. And those who disbelieved, their allies are the Taghut [false god]. They bring them out of the light to darknesses. Those are the fellow of the Fire; they will abide therein forever.
Have you not considered the one who argued with Abraham concerning his Lord, that Allah had given him the kingship? When Abraham said, "My Lord is the one who gives life and causes death." He said, "I give life and cause death." Abraham said, "Indeed, Allah brings the sun from the east, so bring it from the west." So the one who disbelieved was confounded, and Allah does not guide the oppressing people.
Or as the one who passed on a township while it had fallen down on its roofs. He said, "How will Allah revive this after its death?" So Allah caused him to die for a hundred years; then He raised him [to life]. [Allah] said, "How long have you stayed [in death state]?" He said, "I have remained a day or part of a day." [Allah] said, "No but is there [w.r.t this worldly frame of reference], you have remained one hundred years [w.r.t the hereafter frame of reference]. So look at your food and your drink; it has not changed with time. And look at your donkey; and We will make you a sign for the people. And look at the bones [of this donkey] - how We raise them and then We clothe them with flesh." And when it became clear to him, he said, "I know that Allah is over everything competent."
And when Abraham said, "My Lord, show me how You give life to the dead”. [Allah] said, "What for except you have not believed?” [Abraham] said, "No but [i.e., uncertainty] is there! But to quench my heart". [Allah] said, "Take four of the birds and incline them towards you [for slaughter], then set up on each mountain a part of them, then call them. They will come to you in rush [Qur'an 30:25]. And know that Allah is Mighty, Wise.”
The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is the example of a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies to whom He will. And Allah is all-Encompassing, All-Knowing.
Those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah, and then do not follow up what they spent with reminders of generosity, nor hurt will have their reward with their Lord, and there will be no fear on them, nor will they grieve.
Kind speech and forgiveness are better than charity followed by hurt. And Allah is Rich, Forbearing.
O you who believed, do not nullify your charities with reminders of it or hurt, like he who spends his wealth [only] to be seen by the people and does not believe in Allah and the Last Day. So his example is like a barren rock, upon which is soil, then hit it a downpour so it leaves it as a bare stone. They are not capable [on keeping] upon anything from what they have earned. And Allah does not guide the disbelieving people.
And the example of those who spend their wealth to seek the pleasure of Allah and to strengthen their souls, is like a garden on a height upon which a downpour falls, so it brings its fruits in double. And if a downpour does not fall on it, then a drizzle [is sufficient]. And Allah, about what you are working, is Seeing.
Would one of you like to have a garden of palms and vines, flowing from beneath which are the rivers, wherein he has from every fruit and old age afflicted him, and has weak offspring, then it is hit by a whirlwind containing fire and is burned? Thus does Allah manifest His signs to you, perhaps you may ponder.
O you who believed, spend of the good things, what you have earned and of what We have produced for you from the earth. And do not aim the defective of it to spend, while you would not take that [to yourself] except with closed eyes. And know that Allah is Rich, Praiseworthy.
Satan promises you poverty and enjoins you in the obscenity. And Allah promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty. And Allah is all-Encompassing, Knowing.
He gives the wisdom to whom He pleases, and whoever is granted the wisdom, certainly he is granted much good. But not except the possessors of understanding would remember.
And whatever you spent of spendings or you vowed of a vow, for sure, Allah knows it. And there are for the oppressors no helpers.
If you give the charities openly, then it is good; but if you hide it and give it to the poor, it is better for you. And He will remove from you some of your misdeeds. And Allah is Aware about what you are working.
Their guidance is not upon you [O Muhammad], but Allah guides whom He wills. And whatever of goodness you [believers] are spending, so it is for yourselves. And you are not spending except seeking the Face of Allah. And whatever of goodness, you spend, it will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be oppressed.
[Charity is] for the poor, those who are confined in the way of Allah, and are unable to journey in the earth [for livelihood]. The ignorant one would think them rich, from the modesty. You will know them by their mark. They do not beg people frequently [or at all]. And whatever of goodness you spend, for indeed, Allah is Knowing of it.
Those who spend their wealth by the night and the day, secretly and openly, so they will have their reward with their Lord. And no fear will be on them, nor will they grieve.
Those who consume the usury, they cannot set it right [straighten usury] except like the devil setting right the one who is confounded by the devil's touch. That is because they said, "Trade is [just] like the usury." And Allah has permitted trade and has forbidden the usury. So whoever comes to him, an admonition from his Lord, so he desists, so he has what was past, and his affair belongs to Allah. But whoever returns to [the usury], then those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein forever.
Allah destroys the usury and gives increase to the charities. And Allah does not love each sinful infidel.
Indeed, those who believed, and did righteous deeds, and established the prayers, and gave the zakah, they will have their reward from their Lord, and no fear will be on them, nor will they grieve.
O you who believed, fear Allah and give up what remains of the usury, if you are believers.
So, if you do not, then take notice of a war from Allah and His Messenger. And if you repented, then you may have your capital. You do not oppress nor you be oppressed.
And if [the debtor] is in difficulties, then postponement until a time of ease. But if you give [from your right as] charity, it is better for you, if you were knowing.
And Fear a Day in which you will be returned to Allah. Then every soul will be compensated for what it has earned, and they will not be oppressed.
O you who believed, when you contract a debt for a stated term, write it down. And let a scribe write [it] between you in equity. No scribe should refuse to write as Allah has taught him. So let him write and let the one who incurred the debt dictate. And let him fear Allah, his Lord, and not reduce from it anything. But if the one who incurred the debt is of limited understanding or weak or unable to dictate himself, then let his guardian dictate in justice. And bring to witness two witnesses from your men. And if there are not two men [available], then a man and two women from those whom you accept as witnesses - so that if one of the women errs, then the other can remind her. And let not the witnesses refuse when they are called upon. And do not be [too] weary to write it, whether it is small or large, for its [stated] term. That is more just with Allah and more established for the witnessing and more likely to prevent doubt between you, except when it is an immediate transaction which you conduct among yourselves. For [then] there is no blame upon you if you do not write it. And take witnesses when you conclude a contract. Let no scribe be harmed or any witness. For if you do so, indeed, it is [grave] disobedience in you. And fear Allah. And Allah teaches you. And Allah is Knowing about everything.
And if you are on a journey, and cannot find a scribe, then a pledge should be taken. Then if some of you trust some other, then let him who is trusted discharge his entrust, and let him fear Allah, his Lord. And do not conceal the witnessing, for whoever conceals it, then indeed, his heart is sinful. And Allah is Knowing about what you are working.
To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. And whether you show what is within yourselves or hide it, Allah will reckon you with it. And He forgives whom He will and punishes whom He will, and Allah is over everything competent.
The Messenger has believed in what was sent down to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], "We make no discrimination between any of His messengers." And they said, "We hear and we obey. Grant us Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return."
Allah does not charge a soul except in its capacity. For it, is [the reward by] what it has earned and against it, is [the penalty by] what it has earned. "Our Lord, do not blame us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like what You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with what we have no strength to bear by. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people."
