Surah “The City, This Countryside”

as rendered by Saeed Malik — 20 verses

Nay! I swear by this territory—
While you are rightfully free in this territory.
By every begetter and what he begot,
WE did create man in a distended belly
Does man figure no one is measuring out for him?
He says, “I have exhausted copious wealth.”
Does he figure that no one sees him?
Have WE not rendered two eyes for him?
And a tongue and two lips?
And WE have shown him two conspicuous roads?
Yet, he did not charge up the Aqaba.
And what has made you ascertain what the Aqaba is—
freeing of a slave
or feeding, in a time of consuming hunger,
an orphan, with claim of proximity
or a poor one, out in the dust.
Further to that he was of the ones who have believed, and [embraced and] enjoined patience, and [embraced and] enjoined compassion.
Those are the companions of the consecrated Right.
And the ones who have disbelieved in OUR signs, they are the companions of the condemned Left.
A closed fire over them.
