By the emissaries [winds], recognized by feel [blowing gently],
Then by the storms blowing violently
By those [winds] that scatter [clouds] far and wide
Then by those [winds] that make an uneven distribution [of rain-bearing clouds]
Then by those [winds] that bring down what is often talked of [rains]
As excuse for or harbinger of calamity
What you are promised [Day of Resurrection/Judgment] is indeed inevitable
So when the stars are extinguished
And when the sky is torn asunder
And when the mountains are brought down
And when the Messengers are presented at the time appointed —
For what day is the time fixed
For the Day of Decision
And what do you understand what the Day of Decision is
Woe that Day for those who had denied the Truth
Did We not destroy the earlier generations
And then caused the later generations to follow them
Thus do We deal with the sinners
Woe that Day for those who had denied the Truth
Did We not create you from a filthy fluid
And then placed it [fertilized ovum] in a safe abode [womb]
For a known period of time [nine months and some days, normally]
We then fixed terms [for everything in man's life]. And We are the best in fixing terms
Woe that Day for those who had denied the Truth
Have We not made the earth, accommodatin
The living and the dead
And [have We not] placed therein lofty mountains and given you sweet water to drink
Woe that Day for those who had denied the Truth
"Proceed now to what (Hereafter) you had been denying!"
"Proceed now to the three-tier shadow [— of death, Resurrection, and divine Judgment]!"
(The shadow provides) no relief nor shelter from the Blazing Fire [of Hell]
It does indeed throw up sparks like burning logs of fire-wood
[Or] like thick yellow ropes
Woe that Day for those who had denied the Truth
This Day they speak not
Nor are they permitted to put up excuses
Woe that Day for those who had denied the Truth
This is the Day of Decision. We have brought you and the people living in the world earlier, together
If now you have any scheme, dare to use it against Me
Woe that Day for those who had denied the Truth
Pious persons are amidst shades and fountains
And [they get] fruits such as they desire
"Eat and drink to your satisfaction as a reward for your [good] deeds."
Thus indeed do We reward the good
Woe that Day for those who had denied the Truth
Eat and enjoy but little. You are sinners indeed
Woe that Day [Hereafter] for those who had denied the Truth
And when they are told to bow down, they bow not down
Woe that Day for those who had denied the Truth
What hadeeth would they then believe in after this
