Surah “The Cloaked One, The Man Wearing a Cloak, The Clothed One”

as rendered by A. S. Mohamed — 56 verses

O you who are covered,
rise and warn,
and magnify your Lord,
and purify your garments,
and desert the un-cleanliness,
and do not grant favours in order to make gains,
and in the cause of your Lord, be patient.
Then when the trumpet is blown,
that Day will be a difficult day
upon the disbelievers; it will not be easy.
Leave the one whom I created on his own to Me,
and to whom I granted extensive wealth,
and children to behold,
and I made everything smooth for him.
Then he is greedy that I should add more!
But no! He was stubborn towards Our revelations.
I will exhaust him increasingly.
Indeed, he thought and determined.
Woe to him for how he determined.
Then, woe to him for how he determined.
Then he looked.
Then he frowned and scowled.
Then he turned away and was arrogant,
and said, "This is nothing but old magic handed down.
This is nothing other than the words of humans."
I will roast him in Saqar.
And how would you know what Saqar is?
It does not spare nor leave anything.
A scorcher of mankind.
Over it are nineteen.
We have appointed none but angels as the keepers of the Fire. And We have not assigned their number except as a test for those who have disbelieved, and so that those who were given the Scripture would attain certainty, and so that those who believe would increase in faith, and so that those given the Scripture and the believers would not doubt, and so that those with sickness in their hearts and the disbelievers would say, "What did God mean by this example?" Thus does God misguide whom He wills and guide whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. It is nothing but a reminder for mankind.
No indeed! By the moon,
and the night when it withdraws,
and the morning when it brightens,
it is indeed one of the greatest.
A warning to mankind:
to those among you who wish to advance or regress.
Every self is held in pledge by what it has earned.
Only the companions of the right
will be in Gardens and inquiring
about the criminals,
"What brought you into Saqar?"
They said, "We were not of those who observed the Salat,
and we did not use to feed the needy,
and we used to engage in vain discourse with those who did the same,
and we used to deny the Day of the Religion
until we attained certainty."
So the intercession of the intercessors will not avail them.
What is the matter with them that they turn away from the reminder
as if they were panicking donkeys
fleeing from a lion?
Rather, each one of them wants to be given a Scroll laid open.
No indeed! They do not fear the Hereafter.
No indeed! It is a reminder,
so whoever wills shall remember it.
And they will not remember unless God wills. He is most worthy of reverence, and He is most worthy of granting forgiveness.
