Safiur Rahman Mubarakpuri

The English Qur’anic wording associated with Safiur Rahman Mubarakpuri does not come from an independent solo translation but from the abridged English Tafsir Ibn Kathir, the multi-volume Darussalam classical commentary whose translation and abridgement he supervised. As such, the verse renderings serve the surrounding exegesis: they are fairly literal, traditional in register, and embedded in classical Sunni interpretation drawn from Ibn Kathir, with the apparatus of reports, lexical notes, and commentary doing much of the interpretive work. Readers encountering it should understand it as the Qur’an-within-a-tafsir rather than a translation conceived on its own terms.

Mubarakpuri was an Indian Salafi scholar best known for the prize-winning prophetic biography Ar-Raheeq Al-Makhtum (The Sealed Nectar), which won the Muslim World League’s worldwide sira competition in Mecca. He led teams at Darussalam responsible for major English reference works, of which the abridged Tafsir Ibn Kathir is the most influential for Qur’an readers.

The tafsir is widely respected within traditional Sunni and Salafi circles for fidelity to Ibn Kathir; the natural caution is that the translation reflects a specific classical-Salafi interpretive lens and was not crafted as a freestanding literary rendering of the Qur’an.
