Yusuf Ali (Orig. 1938)

This entry preserves Abdullah Yusuf Ali’s original edition of The Holy Qur’an: Text, Translation and Commentary as he first published it in the 1930s, before the later editorial revisions that reshaped the circulating version. It carries the same hallmarks as his renowned work—stately, somewhat archaic English and a dense weave of footnotes and reflective, often poetic commentary—but in the unrevised form, retaining Ali’s own wording, annotations, and interpretive asides exactly as he set them down rather than as later committees amended them.

Ali (1872–1953) was an Indian civil servant, Cambridge-trained barrister, and Islamic scholar; he produced this translation and commentary over several years, with the original edition appearing by 1938. Decades later the text was revised under Saudi sponsorship and reissued by the King Fahd Complex, with changes to both wording and notes—changes this original edition does not contain.
