Talal Itani & AI (2024)
Talal Itani’s The Sure Qur’an is presented as an AI-assisted English translation and as a successor to his earlier ClearQuran. Itani describes a hybrid method: artificial-intelligence tools handle large-scale computation and consistency, while he supplies the scholarly judgment, iterating over word choice, sentence structure, and editing across many passes. As with his earlier work, the result aims for plain, precise modern English without footnotes or interpretive commentary, letting the rendering stand on its own. The translation is released under a permissive license that encourages free distribution.
Itani (born 1961 in Beirut) is a Lebanese-American electrical engineer and software developer who emigrated to the United States as a young man and later turned to Qur’an translation, first publishing ClearQuran in 2012.
Because the AI-assisted approach is novel, reception is still forming, and the project has been discussed as much for its method as for its text. The chief caution is precisely that novelty: a computer-assisted process invites scrutiny over how interpretive decisions are made and verified.
