Surah “Those Who Drag Forth, Soul-snatchers, Those Who Pulled Out”

as rendered by Linda “iLHam” Barto — 46 verses

Consider (the angels) who violently rip out [the souls of the wicked].
Consider (the angels) who gently lift [the souls of the blessed].
Consider (the angels) who glide on errands [of mercy].
They press forward as in a race.
[Their mission is] to make arrangements on command [of their Lord].
One day, turmoil will be turbulent.
More will follow.
Hearts that day will be distressed.
Eyes will be downcast.
They say, “Will we really be returned to the former state?
“Really! Even when we are decayed bones?”
They say, “In that case, it would be a return for loss.”
Truly, there will be a single shout.
Then they will be awakened.
Have you heard the story of Moses?
Your Lord called to him in the sacred valley of Tuwa.
“Go to Pharaoh. He has certainly transgressed.
Say to him, ‘Do you want to be purified?
“I can guide you to your Lord, so you may revere Him?’”
(Moses) showed him a great sign.
But he rejected it and disobeyed.
He purposely turned his back.
He assembled his people and made a declaration.
(Pharaoh) said, “I am your Lord the Highest.”
But Allah punished him and made him an example in the hereafter as well as in this life.
Truly, in this is a lesson for those who have reverence.
Are you any more difficult to create than the skies that Allah has constructed?
He raised its canopy, and He perfected it.
He covered the night with darkness and lit the day with splendor.
Afterward He expounded Earth.
He enticed from it its water and pastures.
He firmly anchored the mountains…
…as a provision for you and your cattle.
Therefore, there will come the awesome and overwhelming event.
[It will be] the day when every person shall regard that for which he/she has struggled.
Hell fire shall be presented in full view for all to see.
For those who transgressed the boundaries…
…and showed preference for the life of this world,…
…the abode will be Hell.
As for those who feared to stand before their Lord and restrained their souls from lustful desires,…
…their abode will be Paradise.
They ask you about the hour. [They ask] when its time will come.
Why should you be concerned about it?
With your Lord is the final time.
You are only a warner for those who fear it.
The day they see it, it will seem like they had tarried only a single evening or overnight.
