Surah “The Beneficent, The Mercy Giving, The Merciful”

as rendered by Mohammad Shafi — 78 verses

The Gracious On
HE has given the knowledge of the Qur'aan
HE has created mankind
He has taught mankind the art and skill of communicating with one another
[HE has created] the sun and the moon on accurately measured dimentions, properties and positions.
And the star and the tree prostrate
And the sky He has raised high and set up the balance
So that you breach not that balance
And weigh things correctly, and cut not the measure short
And He has made the earth suitable for living beings
Therein is fruit, and the palm tree with its sheathed clusters of date
And the grain in its husk, and the plants giving out fragrance
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
He has created mankind of clay, as [mankind make] pottery [out of it]
And He has created the invisible beings [jinns] out of radiation from fire.
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
Lord of the two Easts, and Lord of the two Wests
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
He has made the two streams of water flow side by sid
Between them is a barrier which they do not transgress.
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
Out of these two come forth pearls, and precious corals
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
And it is He Who has made it possible for the ships to remain afloat like some signboards raised in the sea
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
Everything [every ship] thereon [on the sea] is passing
And, what is lasting is the Presence of your Lord, Majestic and Magnanimous
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
Every single thing in the heavens and on earth takes its orders from Him. Every day it is He Who manifests Himself gloriously [and there is none to overcome His Power!
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
We shall soon attend to you, O you sin-laden two [mankind and jinn]
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
O assembly of the jinn and mankind! If you think you can pass beyond the frontiers of the heavens and the earth, then pass! You cannot pass beyond, save by a sanction [from Allah]!
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
A trail of fire and smoke will be sent upon you, and you both will be left with no help
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
Then as the sky disintegrates it would appear a rose-coloured stretch of leather
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
And on that Day none — neither mankind nor jinn — will be questioned about his/her sins
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
All the sinners shall be recognised by distinguishing marks on them, and seized by their forelocks and their feet
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
This is the Hell that the sinners had dismissed as being a lie
They wander to and fro between it [burning hot flame] and burning-hot water
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
And for those who fear their Lord's [Invincible] Position, two Gardens [of Paradise, each for mankind and jinn
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
[The two Gardens, each] having sections of various kinds
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
In those two [gardens] flow two springs
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
In those two [gardens] are pairs of every fruit
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
[The blessed inhabitants of the gardens] recline upon carpets lined with rich brocade; and the fruit of both those gardens is within easy reach
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
In those [gardens] are mates of modest gaze, whom neither man nor any jinn had touched ever before
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
[Those mates are] as though they were rubies and precious corals
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
Could the reward for good deeds be anything but good
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
And there are two gardens besides those two
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny? —
Both [gardens] deep green in colour!
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
In those two [gardens], two gushing springs
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
In both [gardens], fruits, dates and pomegranates
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
In these [gardens] are things excellent and beautiful
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
[In those gardens is companionship of] modest Houris in pavilions
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
[Houris] whom neither man nor any jinn had ever touched before
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny
[Dwellers of Paradise] recline upon green meadows and beautiful carpet
So, which of your Lordճ Means of Power will you deny?
Blessed is the Name of your Lord, Majestic and Glorified
