Surah “The Winnowing Winds, The Scatterers”

as rendered by Hamid S. Aziz — 60 verses

(I swear) By the wind that scatters far and wide
And those that lift and bear heavy loads
And those that flow with ease and gentleness
And those that distribute and apportion by Our command
That of which you are warned is most surely true
And the judgment must most surely come about
Swear by the heaven (sky) full of paths (orbits)
Most surely you are in doctrines (opinions, teachings, ideologies) discordant (or inconsistent or contradictory)
He is turned away by them from truth, who would be (or wishes to be) turned away
Cursed be the conjecturers (or lie-mongers)
Who flounder heedless in an abyss (of ignorance and confusion)
They ask, "When will be the day of judgment?"
It is the day on which they shall be tried at the Fire
Taste you your torment! This is what you sought to hasten
Surely those who guard (against evil) shall be in Gardens and Springs
Taking joy in what their Lord gives them; surely they were before that, the doers of good
They used to sleep but little in the night
And in the morning they prayed for forgiveness
And in their wealth a portion was allotted for him who asked (the needy) and to him who was denied (the outcast, the deprived person or the one who could not ask)
And in the earth there are signs for those who have sure faith
And also in your own souls; will you not then see
And in the heaven is your sustenance and that which you are promised
And by the Lord of the heavens and the earth! It is most surely the truth, even as you speak
Has there come to you information about the honoured guests of Abraham
When they entered his presence they said, "Peace. Peace." Said he, "What a strange people."
Then he turned aside to his family secretly and brought a fat (roasted) calf
And placed it before them. He said, "What! Will you not eat?"
(When they did not eat) he conceived in his mind a fear of them. They said, "Fear not." And they gave him the good news of a son endowed with knowledge
Then his wife came up in great grief, and she struck her face and said, "An old barren woman!"
They said, "Thus says your Lord: Surely He is the Wise, the Knowing."
He said, "What is your errand then, O Messengers!"
They said, "Surely we are sent to a guilty people
"That we may send down upon them stone of clay (or brimstones)
"Sent forth from your Lord for the extravagant (those who transgress beyond bounds)."
Then We brought forth such believers as were therein
But We found not therein but one house of those who had Surrendered (Muslims)
And We left therein a sign for those who fear the grievous penalty
And in Moses (was another sign). When We sent him to Pharaoh with clear authority
But he turned away with his forces and said, "A sorcerer or a mad man."
So We seized him and his hosts and hurled them into the sea and his was the blame
And in A´ad (was another sign). When We sent upon them the destructive wind
It spared naught on which it blew, but made it like dust
And in Thamud (was another sign). When it was said to them, "Enjoy yourselves for a while."
But they revolted against the commandment of their Lord, so the rumbling (thunderbolt or stunning noise of an earthquake) overtook them while they looked
And they were not able to rise up, nor could they defend themselves
And the people of Noah (were also a sign) before that, surely they were a transgressing people
And the heaven, We raised it high with power, and it is We that expand the vastness of space (or We are the expanders of it)
And the earth, We have spread it out; how gracious was the Spreader thereof
And of all things have We created pairs, that you may reflect (or receive instruction)
Therefore flee unto Allah, surely I am a plain Warner to you from Him
And set not up with Allah another God: surely I am a plain Warner to you from Him
Thus there did not come to those before them a messenger but they said, "(He is) A sorcerer or a mad man."
Is this the legacy (or tradition) they have transmitted to each other? Nay! They are a people extravagant (transgressing beyond bounds)
Then turn your back upon them for you are not to blame
And continue to teach (or remind), for surely the reminder profits the believers
And I have not created the jinn and mankind except to worship (serve) Me
No sustenance do I require from them, nor do I require that they should feed Me
Surely it is Allah Who is the Bestower of sustenance, the Lord of Power, the ever Steadfast
And lo! Those who do wrong shall have a portion like the portion of those of earlier generations, therefore let them not ask Me to hasten
Woe to those who disbelieve because of their Day which they are promised
