Surah “Jonah”

as rendered by Zulfiquar Ali Bhotto — 109 verses

Alif [Common sense], Lam [Self referencing], Ra [Hadith references]. These are the verses of the Book, Establishing [its interpretation].
Is it a wonder to mankind that We revealed [the book] to a man from them [instructing him] that: "Warn mankind and give glad tidings to those who believed that for them is a truthful footing with their Lord"? The infidel said, "Indeed, this [book] is indeed an obvious magic."
Indeed, your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and the earth in six days and then He turned, settled, switched, prepared the Throne on, laying down the commands [to govern, Qur'an 7:54]. There is no intercessor except after His permission. That is Allah, your Lord, so worship Him. Then will you not remember?
To Him is your return, altogether. Allah's promise is true. Indeed, He originates the creation then He repeats it. He truly rewards those who believed and worked righteous deeds with the equity. And who disbelieved, for them is a drink of scalding fluid and a painful punishment about what they were disbelieving.
He is the one who made the sun a radiant and the moon a light and determined for it, phases that you may know the number of years and account [of time]. Allah has not created this except in the truth. He details the signs for a people who know.
Indeed, in the difference of the night and the day [i.e., season] and in what Allah has created in the heavens and the earth [season wise diversity in livelihood, beauty, feelings, adornments], there are signs for a people who are conscious [of God].
Indeed, those who do not hope for Our meeting and are pleased with the worldly life and earned security therein and those who, they become heedless of Our signs.
It is those, their home will be the Fire, about what they were earning [Qur'an 10:7 in effect].
Indeed, those who believed and worked righteous deeds, their Lord will guide them by their faith. Will be flowing from beneath them, the rivers, in the Paradises of Bliss.
Their call therein will be, "Exalted are You, O Allah," and their greeting therein will be, "Peace." And the conclusion of their call will be, "Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds."
And if Allah hastens for mankind the evil [they earn Qur'an 10:8] as they haste in earning about the pleasures [in Qur'an 10:7], there would have already been decreed for them their term [Qur'an 10:8]. But We leave the ones who do not hope for Our meeting, in their transgression, wandering blindly.
And when affliction touches the human, he calls Us to his side or sitting or stalled; then when We removed from him his affliction, he passes on as if he had never called Us to [remove] an affliction that touched him. Thus, it was made pleasing for the extremist whatever they were working on.
And certainly We already destroyed the generations before you when they oppressed while their messengers came to them with the proof, but they were not believing in the least. Thus do We recompense the criminal people.
Then We made you successors in the land after them so that We may observe how would you act.
And when Our proof verses are recited unto them, those who do not hope for Our meeting say, "Bring a Qur'an other than this to us, or change it." Say [O Muhammad], "It is not for me to change it of my own accord. I only follow what is revealed to me. Indeed I fear, if I disobey my Lord, the punishment of a great Day."
Say, "If Allah had willed, I would not have recited it [Qur'an] upon you, nor made you understand about it. For sure I had stayed within you a whole of my life before it. Then will you not use reasoning [to admit]?"
So who is more oppressor than he who invents a lie against Allah or belies His verses? Indeed, the criminals do not succeed.
And they worship other than Allah that which neither harms them nor benefits them. And they say, "These are our intercessors with Allah." Say, "Are you informing Allah about what He does not know in the heavens or in the earth?" Exalted is He and Most high above what they associate [with Him].
And mankind was not except one community, then they differed [Qur'an 2:213]. And if not for a term [Qur'an 10:20] that preceded from your Lord, it would have been decreed between them this [the ground truth about signs] wherein they are differing.
And they say, "If only a sign had been sent down to him from his Lord?" So say, "The unseen only belongs to Allah [in the truth], so wait; indeed, I am with you among those who wait [time will expose evolution of gossip into signs]."
And when We let the people taste mercy after adversity has touched them, actually, they have a plot concerning Our verses. Say, "Allah is swiftest in planning. Indeed, Our messengers are writing down what you plot."
He is the one who enables you to travel in land and sea until, when you are in the ships and they sail with them with a fair breeze and they rejoice therein, a storm wind reaches them. And the waves come upon them from everywhere and they assumed that they are surrounded by them. They called Allah, sincere to Him in religion, "If You save us from this, we will surely be of the thankful."
Then when He has saved them, as usual, they starts transgressing in the earth without being true [to themselves]. O mankind, your transgressing is only against yourselves, [being merely] the enjoyment of the life of the world. Then to Us is your return, and We will inform you about what you were working.
The example of [this] worldly life is only like water which We send down from the sky then it mixes up with the plants of the earth, from which mankind and livestock eat. Until, when the earth has taken its adornment and is beautified and its people suppose that they have capability over it, there comes to it Our command by night or by day, then We make it as a harvest, as if it had not flourished yesterday. Thus do We explain in detail the signs for a people who give thought.
And Allah invites to the Home of Peace and guides whomever He wills to a straight path.
For those who have done good is the best [reward] and extra. No dust will cover their faces, nor humiliation. Those are companions of Paradise; they will abide therein eternally.
And for those who have earned the evil deeds, the reward of an evil deed is its equivalent, and humiliation will cover them. They will have from Allah no protector - as if their faces are covered with dark patches, from the night. Those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally.
And [mention, O Muhammad], on a Day We will gather them all together, then We say to those who associate others with Allah, "Be in your places, you and your `partners'." Then We will separate between them, and their "partners" said, "Not to us, you were worshipping.
So every witnesses sufficed about Allah as a witness between us and between you that we were of your worship certainly unaware."
There every soul will be put to trial for what it did previously, and they will be returned to Allah, their master, the Truth, and would go astray from them whatever they were inventing.
Say [to them], "Who provides livelihood for you from the heaven and the earth? Or who owns [your] hearing and sight? And who brings the living from the dead and brings the dead from the living? And who lays down the command [to arrange every matter]?" Then they will say, "Allah." Then say, "Then will you not fear [Him]?"
For that [Qur'an 10:31], Allah is your Lord, the truth. And what can be after the truth except the astray? How then are you turned away?
Thus the word of your Lord came true upon those who rebel, that they do not believe.
Say, "Is there of your `partners' any who originates the creation, then repeats it?" Say, "Allah originates the creation, then He repeats it. So, how are you fooled?"
Say, "Are there of your `partners' any who guides to the truth?" Say, "Allah guides to the truth. So is He who guides to the truth more worthy to be followed or he who guides not unless he is guided? Then what is [wrong] with you, how you figure out?"
And most of them follow not except assumptions. Indeed, the assumptions do not avail a thing from the truth. Indeed, Allah is Knowing about what they are doing.
And whatever [landmines] was there in this Qur'an that he/it [Prophet Muhammad (as)/Qur'an] could be slandered by those other than Allah is but a confirmation of what is in between his/its two hands [the truth] and a further explanation of the Book therein [those landmines, Qur'an 17:73-75 or Qur'an 15:90-92] leaves no doubt, [the Qur'an] being from the Lord of the worlds.
Or are they saying, "He [Muhammad] slandered it?" Say, "So, bring forth a surah like it, and call whomever you can, other than Allah, if you are ever truthful."
No but is there! they belied about what they are not encompassing by its knowledge and whose interpretation has not come to them yet [those landmines, Qur'an 10:37]. Thus belied those before them. So observe how the end of the oppressors was.
And of them is he who believes in it, and of them is he who does not believe in it. And your Lord is most knowing about the spoilers.
And if they belie you, [O Muhammad], then say, "To me is my deeds, and to you are your deeds. You are innocent of whatever I am working, and I am innocent of whatever you are working."
And of them are some who listen to you. But can you make the deaf to hear [his mind] if they were not reasoning?
And of them are some who look to you. But can you make the blind to guide [his insight] if they were not seeing?
Indeed, Allah does not oppress the people in anything, but the people, they oppress themselves.
And on a Day when He will gather them, as if they had not remained [in the earth] except an hour of the day, they will recognize each other between their [blindness and deafness]. Lost will be indeed those who belied the meeting with Allah. And they were not the guided ones.
Whether We show you [O Muhammad, as demo] some of what We threaten them with [Qur'an 10:45, by recalling them from the Judgment Day to your present], or We recall you [from your present to their future on the Judgment Day], So [in both time travels] to Us would be their return. Then Allah is a Witness over what they are doing.
And for every community had a messenger. So when their messenger came, it was judged between them [messenger and his people, Qur'an 7:6] in justice, and they will not be oppressed.
And they say [to be believers], "When is this promise, if you are truthful?"
Say [O Muhammad], "I do not own for myself a harm or a benefit except what Allah should will. For every community is a [specified] term. When their term has come, then they can not remain behind an hour, nor can they precede [it]."
Say [O Muhammad], "Have you [infidels] considered? If His punishment comes to you suddenly by night or by day? What from it the criminals wish to hasten?"
Is it then when what after occurred, you would believe in it? Now? And you were already seeking to hasten in it.
Then it will be said to those who oppressed, "Taste the eternal punishment. Are you being recompensed except by what you were earning?"
And they ask you [O Muhammad], "Is it true [the punishment]?" Say, "Yes, by my Lord. Indeed, It is indeed the truth; and you cannot escape it."
And if each soul that oppressed, had whatever is in the earth, it would offer it as ransom. And they hide the repentance when they saw the punishment, and it will be judged between them with equity, and they will not be oppressed.
Verily to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. Verily the promise of Allah is truth. But most of them do not know.
He gives life and causes death, and to Him alone all you will be returned.
O mankind, there has certainly come to you an instruction from your Lord and a healing for what is in your breasts and guidance and mercy for the believers.
Say, "In the bounty of Allah and in His mercy, so in that let them [the believers] rejoice". It is better than what they amass.
Say, "Have you [mankind] considered what Allah has sent down for you of livelihood. But you have made from it, [some] lawful and [some] unlawful?" Say, "Has Allah grant permission to you, or against Allah, you are forging?"
And what is their assumption of those who invent lies against Allah on the Day of Resurrection? Indeed Allah is surely the Owner of a bounty upon mankind, but most of them are not thankful.
And [O Muhammad], any business you may be in or any portion from the Qur'an you may be reciting thereof or nothing from your deeds - you [mankind] may be doing, except that We are witness upon you when you are engaged therein. And not absent from your Lord, any [part] of an atom's weight in the earth or in the heaven or [anything] smaller than that or larger but that it is in an obvious book.
No doubt. Indeed [for] the friends of Allah, there shall be no fear upon them, nor shall they grieve.
They are those who believed and were fearing [Allah].
For them are glad tidings in the life of the world and in the Hereafter. No change can there be for the words of Allah. That is what is the great triumph.
And let not their saying dishearten you [O Muhammad]. Indeed, the honour belongs to Allah altogether. He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
No doubt. Indeed, to Allah belongs whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth. And what may those who call other than Allah as [His] `partners' follow? Left is nothing they may follow except the assumptions, and left is nothing they are except on lying.
He is the one who made for you the night that you may rest therein, and the day [the sun] giving sight. Indeed in that are signs for a people who listen.
They said, "Allah has taken a son." Glory be to Him; He is Self-Sufficient. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. [Tell them], "You have absolutely no authority [Books, Messengers] regarding this. Do you say against Allah what you know nothing about?"
Say, "Indeed, those who fabricate the lie against Allah will not succeed."
A [little] enjoyment in this world; then to Us is their return; then We will make them taste the severe punishment about what they were disbelieving.
And recite upon them the news of Noah, when he said to his people, "O my people, if it was hard upon you - my stay and my reminding by the verses of Allah - then upon Allah I have relied. So decide upon your course of action you and your associates. Then let not your plan be obscure upon you. Then carry it out against me and do not give me respite.
So if you turned away [from my reminding], but I have asked you no wage. Left upon none my reward except upon Allah, and I have been commanded to be of the Muslims."
Then they belied him, so We saved him and those with him in the ship. And We made them successors, and We drowned those who belied Our verses. So see how it was [how], the end of those who were warned.
Then, after him, We dispatched messengers to their peoples. So they came to them with the proofs but they were not ready to believe in what they belied therein before. Thus, We seal over the hearts of the transgressors.
Then, after them [those past messengers], We dispatched Moses and Aaron to Pharaoh and his chief leaders with Our signs, but they were arrogant and were a criminal people.
So, when there came to them the truth from Us they said, "Indeed, this is surely an obvious magic."
Moses said, "Is this what you [people] say for the truth when it has come to you? Is this a magic? But the magicians will not succeed."
They said, "Have you come to us to divert us from what we found our fathers on, in order that you two may become supreme in the land? And we are not believers in you two."
And Pharaoh said [to his men], "Bring me with every learned magician."
So, when the magicians came, Moses said to them, "Throw whatever you are to throw."
Then when they threw, Moses said, "What you have brought is magic. Indeed, Allah will nullify it. Indeed, Allah does not amend the work of corrupters.
And Allah fruits the truth by His words, even if the criminals may hate it."
So believed in Moses not except [some] children from his people, for fear of Pharaoh and his chief leaders that they would test them. And indeed, Pharaoh was haughty in the land, and indeed, he was indeed of the extremists.
And Moses said, "O my people, if you were believing in Allah, then rely upon Him, if you were submitting [Muslims]."
So they said, "Upon Allah we rely. Our Lord, make us not [objects of] test for the oppressing people
And save us by Your mercy from the people, the infidels."
And We revealed to Moses and his brother that: "Settle for your people in Egypt houses and make your houses [facing the] Qibla and establish the prayer and give good tidings to the believers."
And Moses said, "Our Lord, indeed You have given Pharaoh and his chief leaders splendor and wealth in the worldly life, Our Lord, that they may stray [test those in Qur'an 10:83] from Your way. Our Lord, obliterate their wealth and harden their hearts. For [they and those in Qur'an 10:83] will not believe until they see the painful punishment."
Allah responded [to Moses and Aaron], "Your call is answered. So straighten yourselves and do not follow the way of those who do not know."
And We took the Children of Israel across the sea, and Pharaoh and his soldiers pursued them, in rebellion and transgression, until, when drowning overtook him, he said, "I believe that there is no deity except that in whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am of the Muslims."
What! Now! And you had disobeyed [Him] before and were of the corrupters?
So today We will save you in your body, that you may be to whoever succeed you a sign. And indeed, many from the mankind, of Our signs, are heedless.
And We had certainly settled the Children of Israel, a true settlement place; and We provided them of the good things, and they did not differ until the knowledge had come to them. Indeed, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection this [knowledge of afterlife, resurrection etc] wherein they were differing.
So if you were in doubt [O Muhammad] about what We sent down to you, then you should ask those who are reading the Book before you. Certainly the truth has indeed come to you from your Lord. So do not be of the doubters [considering Qur'an 26:192-197, Qur'an 46:10].
And do not be of those who belied the verses of Allah then you [too] will be of the losers.
Indeed, those against whom the word of your Lord [Qur'an 11:119, Qur'an 32:13] has been fruited will not believe,
Even if every sign should come to them, until they see the painful punishment [as in Qur'an 10:92].
So Why was there no town that believed as such that benefitted its faith except the people of Jonah? When they believed [the verses, Qur'an 10:100], We removed from them the penalty of disgrace in the life of the world, and gave them enjoyment for a time.
And if your Lord willed, whoever is in the earth would have believed all of them, altogether. Then, [O Muhammad], would you compel mankind, till they become believers?
And it was not for a soul to believe except by Allah's permission; and He will set defilement upon those who do not reason [to believe].
Say, "Observe what is in the heavens and the earth." And the signs and the warnings [therefrom] will not be useful on a people who do not believe?
So do they wait except the like of the days of those who passed away before them [Qur'an 10:92]? Say, "Then wait; indeed, I am with you from those who are waiting."
Then We save our messengers and those who have believed. Thus, it is incumbent upon Us that We save the believers.
Say [O Muhammad], "O mankind, if you are in doubt of my religion, then [consider that] I do not worship those which you worship other than Allah. But I worship Allah, the One who would recall your [worldly life instance-by-instance on the Day of Judgment and on your last few breaths]. And I have been commanded to be of the believers.
And that [O muslim], `Establish your face for the religion as a monotheist and do not be of the polytheists;
And do not call other than Allah, what neither benefits you nor harms you, for if you did, then indeed you would be of the oppressors.'"
And if Allah should touch you [O Muhammad] with adversity, there is no remover for it, except Him. And if He wants for you in goodness, then there is no repeller for His bounty. He strikes with it to whom He wills of His slaves. And He is the Forgiving, the Merciful
Say [O Muhammad], "O mankind, Indeed, the truth has come to you from your Lord, so whoever is guided is only guided for his soul, and whoever strays then only he strays against his soul. And I am not over you a manager."
And [O Muhammad] follow what is revealed to you and be patient until Allah establishes [the truth, Qur'an 10:108]. And He is the best of establishers.
